Ambrosius Eichhorn called Ambros Eichhorn , (born September 6, 1758 in Wittlekofen , † March 21, 1820 in St. Paul Abbey in Lavanttal ) was a Benedictine , teacher, historian, priest and writer.

Life

Ambros was born as the son of a village school teacher in Wittlekofen near Bonndorf. After the basic knowledge that his father imparted to him, he attended the Jesuit school in Rottweil for five years . To study rhetoric he went to the monastery of St. Blasien, where he received a scholarship. During this time the monastery was under Abbot Martin Gerbert . The future abbot Berthold Rottler became his teacher in philosophy and theology. Franz Josef Waitzenegger wrote about it: Tirelessly in his apprenticeship, he collected everything that was good, like a bee, and always immediately put it in order.

On November 8, 1779, he made his vows. In 1782 he had completed his studies in theology, but due to his age, he was only ordained a priest a year later. In the meantime he dealt extensively with diplomacy, numismatics and antiquity. For the Germania Sacra that had just started , Gerbert and Ämillian Ussermann commissioned him to write the history of the diocese of Chur . Prince-Bishop Franz Dionys von Rost had the archives opened for him. During this time he was also active as a pastor in Bernau in the Black Forest and as a novice master in the monastery. In 1797 his work was published in the monastery printing house. Prince Abbot Mauritius Ribbele appointed him librarian and archivist and prior of the Oberried monastery , where he worked until it was dissolved.

After arriving in St. Paul, he was immediately appointed prefect of the Klagenfurt grammar school . Here he was a strict but also popular teacher and wrote writings on the history of Carinthia. These appeared, among others, in Hormayer's archive and in the magazine Carinthia . Now he was appointed archivist in St. Paul and, in 1818, prefect at the collegiate high school in St. Paul . But as early as 1820 he suffered pneumonia from the consequences of which he died.
