Life
Joseph Ussermann came from a humble background and stood out for his extraordinary talent and thirst for knowledge. He first attended the high school at St. Peter . Here he learned the ancient languages, Latin , Greek, Hebrew and music and then attended the monastery school in St. Blasien, where he studied theology and philosophy . In May 1757 he entered the order and was given the name Ämillian. He was ordained a priest on May 16 . Because of his abilities, he was soon appointed to the University of Salzburg , where he took the chair of moral theology and Hebrew literature. Here he wrote a compendium on the syntax of Hebrew. He was soon drawn back home, where he was appointed monastery librarian. The library was significantly renewed under him, so that it reached the value before the fire of 1768. Ussermann, who knew his books inside out and by heart, was called the living library . After only four years as a librarian, he succumbed to an illness.
