The Europagymnasium Klagenfurt in the municipality of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee in Carinthia is one of the oldest grammar schools in Austria . The general education high school today focuses on the teaching of European languages. The school building is a listed building .
history
The grammar school was founded in 1552 as a school for scholars during the Reformation under the name Collegium Sapientiae et Pietatis and was located in an outbuilding of the Protestant prayer house at that time (today Klagenfurt Cathedral ). After 1586 it moved to what is now called the (Old) Castle . From 1593 to 1601 Hieronymus Megiser was the rector of the highly reputable college. Up to 1601 the estates maintained the high school, through the Counter-Reformation they were handed over to the Jesuit order in 1604 , which converted them into a university Jesuit college .
In 1773 (the year of the dissolution of the order under Joseph II ) the school was elevated to a lyceum , and since 1850 it has been run as an eight-class grammar school with Matura . In 1891 the grammar school moved from today's Domplatz to a newly built building on Völkermarkter Ring. The old school building was then used as a barracks ("Jesuit barracks") and apartment building until it was demolished after the Second World War.
In 1967 the school was divided into the "First Federal High School" and the "Second Federal High School" (today BG / BRG Mössingerstraße), but the two schools remained at the same location until 1988. In 1970 a school experiment was started at the Second Federal High School under the title “Realgymnasium with special consideration of the arts education”. In 1977 the Bundesrealgymnasium Klagenfurt-Viktring emerged. In 1999 the name of the First Federal High School was renamed "European High School". Since December 17, 2008, the school has also been allowed to use the Klagenfurt city arms and to print them on documents.
The Alumni Club Europagymnasium Klagenfurt was founded in 2016.
Focus
The Europagymnasium is now a general education high school and has a special focus on teaching language skills. For example, there have been “European classes” since 1995, in which most subjects are taught in English . In the 3rd grade (7th grade) the students choose Latin, Italian or French and in the 5th grade (9th grade) all who have had Latin up to now can choose between ancient Greek, French or Italian, the others have to take Latin. Other languages are offered as optional or compulsory elective subjects. Further offers are the classic grammar school and the grammar school with IT services. Since the 2013/14 school year, an all-day class has been offered in an interlaced form.
