Harald Scheucher (born September 23, 1940 in Klagenfurt ) is an Austrian politician ( Austrian People's Party ) and was mayor of the state capital Klagenfurt am Wörthersee from 1997 to 2009 .

Life

Harald Scheucher was born the son of Blasius Scheucher, who later became the Vice Mayor of Klagenfurt, and his wife Herta.

He visited in Klagenfurt elementary school and high school, studied in Vienna World Trade at the University of Economics and graduated as a business graduate from. He began his professional career as secretary to Michael Haslinger , then Deputy Governor of Salzburg, and later moved to the Carinthian Chamber of Commerce, where he headed the foreign trade department for many years.

In 1984 Scheucher was elected as a mandate of the ÖVP in the Carinthian state parliament, in 1986 he became state party chairman of the ÖVP Carinthia and second deputy governor in the Carinthian state government. From May 1989 to March 1997 he was again a member of the Carinthian state parliament and from 1994 held the function of third president. From July 1992 he was also a councilor in Klagenfurt.

In March 1997, after a run-off election, Scheucher was elected mayor of the state capital Klagenfurt with 67.8% to succeed Leopold Guggenberger . In 2003 he was confirmed in his office.

Many major projects were implemented in Klagenfurt during his tenure as mayor. The city developed more and more into an important center in the Alps-Adriatic region. Scheucher's track record includes: the new construction of the Wörthersee Stadium , the implementation of Euro 2008 , the expansion of the inner city ring, the construction of the new train station , the redesign of the New Square, the Lakeside Science & Technology Park , course facilities at the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences , the Construction of the city ​​arcades , purchase and renovation of Loretto Castle , the IKEA settlement, etc.
