Maria-Luise Mathiaschitz - actually Maria-Luise Mathiaschitz-Tschabuschnig - (born January 27, 1957 in St. Georgen im Lavanttal ) is an Austrian politician of the SPÖ and a doctor . She has been the mayor of the Carinthian capital Klagenfurt am Wörthersee since March 15, 2015 .

education and profession

After elementary school Mathiaschitz attended the federal high school in Villach , which she graduated with the Matura .

Subsequently, she graduated from the University of Innsbruck a medical degree and doctorate in 1982 , Dr. med. univ.

Between 1982 and 1985 she worked as a regular doctor before moving to the municipality of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, where she worked as an environmental doctor. Subsequently, she was appointed environmental doctor for the state of Carinthia before she was appointed deputy state medical director.

Political career

Mathiaschitz moved into the city council of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee in 2003. The departments for health and the environment have been assigned to her. From 2008 to 2009 she was Deputy Mayor under Mayor Harald Scheucher (ÖVP) and from 2009 to 2015 Vice Mayor under Christian Scheider ( BZÖ ).

Already in the mayoral election in 2009 Mathiaschitz ran as the top candidate of the SPÖ for mayoral election in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee. Although she was able to narrowly distance Harald Scheucher, she ultimately had to admit defeat to Christian Scheider. After initially going into a coalition with the FPÖ , she abandoned this collaboration after two and a half years and from then on became Scheider's sharpest critic.

In the municipal council election on March 1, 2015 , Mathiaschitz once again led the SPÖ in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee as the top candidate in the election campaign and at the top. Under her leadership, the SPÖ was able to gain 7.13 percent and 4 mandates and clearly overtake the previously ruling BZÖ, which has now reunited as the FPÖ . She herself had to vote 30.08 percent against the incumbent mayor Christian Scheider, who achieved 31.08 percent, in a runoff election for the mayor. In this run-off election, which was held on March 15, 2015, she was able to prevail with 53.31 percent against Scheider (46.69 percent), whereby Mathiaschitz was elected mayor of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee. Thus, for the first time in 42 years - Hans Ausserwinkler was the last SPÖ mayor from 1957 to 1973 - the SPÖ re-established the mayor and for the first time ever a woman as mayor in a state capital.

In initial statements, Mathiaschitz announced that he wanted to form a coalition with the ÖVP and the Greens . “But there will be no horse trading,” emphasized Mathiaschitz. She categorically ruled out any collaboration with the FPÖ.

In November 2019, she was elected chairwoman together with the Mayor of Ternitz, Rupert Dworak, at the Federal Conference of the Social Democratic Association of Community Representatives (GVV) .

Mathiaschitz is married and has two children.
