Klagenfurt Hauptbahnhof is a through station in the city of Klagenfurt in the Austrian state of Carinthia and, with up to 190 trains per day, is one of the most important transport hubs in southern Austria.
history
In 1863 Klagenfurt was connected to the southern railway and a central station Klagenfurt-St. Ruprecht erected. At that time, Klagenfurt was supposed to become the center of the railways in Carinthia , but the city fathers refused, so that today the Villach main station takes on this role.
The Klagenfurt train station was not in the municipality of Klagenfurt until 1938; the station was only renamed Klagenfurt Hauptbahnhof when St. Ruprecht was incorporated . During the Second World War , the old train station was so badly damaged that it was demolished and a new building was erected.
In the years 2001 to 2005 it was rebuilt and brought up to date with the latest technology.
Reception building
The station building is structured on two levels. The main station hall and platforms 1 and 21 are on the ground floor. A flight of stairs and two escalators lead to the upper floor and platforms 2 to 5. There is also a connection to the St. Ruprecht district.
At the moment (2011) trains can stop at 6 platforms at Klagenfurt Central Station, with a dead end at platform 21 . Platform 1 is located by the reception building and forms a common central platform with platform 21 on the east side. Platforms 2 and 3 as well as 4 and 5 are each located together on a central platform. Due to the station offensive, the platforms correspond to the current state of accessibility and are equipped with lifts and escalators .
Hoke artwork
The main hall of the main station was designed by Giselbert Hoke . In 1950 he won his first competition: the design of now listed wall frescoes in the hall, each 22 meters wide and 5 meters high. The east-facing “Wall of the Plaintiffs” and the west-facing “Wall of the Accused” show themselves in a formal language based on Pablo Picasso .
However, the population of Klagenfurt was not particularly impressed by modern art: After its completion in 1956, protests broke out. The work of art was preserved.

Bus station
The buses of the Stadtwerke Klagenfurt (STW) stop right in front of the main entrance , with which the Heiligengeistplatz, the central transfer point of the city, can be reached at close intervals. Since the changeover in 2012, the main station has been a hub in the municipal utility network.
