The Erdberg station of the Vienna underground line U3 is an above-ground station in the 3rd district of Vienna, Landstrasse . It was opened on April 6, 1991 and formed the eastern end of this line for around ten years, until the opening of the fifth so far last section of the U3 between Erdberg and Simmering. The name of the station goes back to the old suburb of Erdberg , which was first mentioned by name in a document in the 12th century. Legend has it that the English King Richard the Lionheart was captured here on his way back from the Third Crusade.

The station extends at street level between the Franzosengraben out of town and the Nottendorfer Gasse on the inside, parallel to Erdbergstraße and is crossed by the Südosttangente . The station has a central platform. Exits from both ends lead to Nottendorfer Gasse on the one hand and Franzosengraben on the other, and via an enclosed footbridge to a park-and-ride facility and the Wiener Linien customer center , which has been located here since 1994. Another, barrier-free access leads to Schnirchgasse. Immediately after the station area is the Erdberg depot, which is connected to the new north branch of the U2 by a service track under the south-east bypass.

In the immediate vicinity is the Arena event center , the Austrian State Archives in Nottendorfer Gasse, the Austrian control center for civil aviation Austro Control and the Vienna International Bus Terminal (VIB) , which is served by Eurolines and Flixbus .

Design

Since 1991 two murals by the artist Peter Atanasov have been installed outdoors on Erdbergstrasse. At the exit Nottendorfer Gasse you will find the picture in the direction of the city and at the exit on Erdbergstrasse the picture in the direction out of town . The surfaces, made of hand-painted tiles, show calm, friendly cityscapes in which numerous symbols have been incorporated. As a tribute to the subway, a stylized tunnel and staircase can be seen on both pictures.
