The Gasometer underground station is a station on the Vienna underground line U3. It is located underground in the 11th district of Simmering, near the eponymous gasometers of the Vienna gasworks , which were opened in 1896 and served their original purpose until 1984. Between 1999 and 2001 this monument to industrialization was revitalized and equipped with apartments, a student residence, a shopping center, the Vienna City and State Archives , the Bank-Austria-Halle concert hall and a large cinema. The station was opened on December 2, 2000 when the fifth and so far last section of the U3 was released.
In the original plans for the Simmeringer branch of the U3 from the 1990s, this station was not included and was only added in a later phase after the gasometer ideas competition in 1995. It has two side platforms and is the only station on a new line to have only one exit. This is called Modecenterstraße / Gasometer (named after the nearby street of the same name) and, in addition to stairs, also has an elevator and an escalator (only up). It is possible to change to the 72A bus line.
