List of train stations in Italy |
The Venezia Mestre train station is next to the train station Venezia Santa Lucia one of the two main railway stations of Venice . It is one of the 13 largest train stations in Italy and is managed by FS subsidiary Grandi Stazioni SpA . It is located in the Mestre district on the mainland .
history
The station was opened in 1842 as a station on the Milan – Venice railway line. It ended in the subsequent Porto Marghera train station . In 1846, the Ponte della Libertà was extended to the Santa Lucia train station on the main island. With the opening of the line to Trieste in 1879, Mestre was expanded to become a railway junction.
From 2008 to 2012, the station underwent extensive renovation work to prepare it for new high-speed lines to Padua and Verona, including an increase in the number of tracks from 9 to 13.
meaning
The station is the largest railway junction in Eastern Italy, whose 13 tracks are frequented by 500 trains and 82,000 travelers every day. This means that the numbers are slightly higher than at Santa Lucia train station. It is served by all long-distance trains and is the central regional transport hub in Veneto .
Since April 2012 it has also been served by the Trenitalia competition Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori with their italo high-speed trains, which have their Venezia Santa Lucia – Roma Ostiense route also stop in Mestre.
construction
The station only serves as a through station for trains to / from Santa Lucia; Trains on the Verona – Trieste and Verona – Udine routes have to make heads.
As part of the renovation work, the unbundling of the lines in front of the station will be postponed and made possible by means of bridges, so that the platforms are now divided according to directions:
- Tracks 1 & 2: trains to / from Trieste
- Tracks 3 & 4: Trains from / to Udine
- Tracks 5 & 6: Trains to / from the Mestre – Padua high-speed line
- Tracks 7 & 8: all trains ending or beginning in Mestre
- Tracks 9, 10, 11: Trains from / to the old line from / to Padua
- Tracks 12 & 13: Trains from / to Adria or Trento
All tracks are available for traffic to Santa Lucia with the exception of tracks 7 and 8, which are reserved for trains ending or departing in Mestre.
Local transport
The station is connected to local transport via the tram line T2 of the Venice tram . This is operated by ACTV .
