The Lienz train station is the main station in East Tyrol . It represents an important stop on the Drautalbahn . The station has existed since 1871 and was rebuilt between 1947 and 1950 after severe damage in 1944/45.

history

The Lienz train station was built in 1871 according to plans by Wilhelm von Flattich . Since the Lienz train station was the most important station on the connection between Villach and Franzensfeste , the train station in Lienz was designed as a class I station building .

The original station building consisted of the reception hall, a restaurant and an associated auxiliary building. In addition, there was a bricked goods store, a weighbridge , a water station building with extensions and a coal shed. For the accommodation of the vehicles and the operation there were also two locomotive depots, a carriage depot, the railway maintenance office and two station keepers' houses.

During the Second World War, the Lienz railway station was damaged several times by bombing raids between 1944 and 1945. The worst attack took place on April 19, 1945, when the main building with the restaurant was badly damaged and the locomotive shed with revolving platform was destroyed. The main building was subsequently rebuilt between 1947 and 1950.

Building description

Lienz station based on plans by Wilhelm von Flattich (1871)

The main building with the restaurant was built in 1871 in two separate structures with a connecting, covered corridor. The main building corresponded to the rule type I of the Pustertal Railway stations and was designed as a two-storey building with a hipped gable roof and a three-axis, gabled central projection. The facade was exposed to stone and provided with corner blocks, the simply framed portal and window openings decorated with rusticated crowns. The wood-paneled gable fields were in turn decorated with decorative cut boards and window groups. The restoration building was also built on two floors in 1871, although the building was a little lower. This building also had a hipped gable roof and had a comparable exterior design to the much larger main building.

In 1936 the first major renovations and extensions were carried out at the Lienz train station. A ground-level connecting wing was built between the reception building and the restoration building and the waiting room was redesigned. After the destruction of the Second World War, the station building was rebuilt, with parts of the eastern structural area (post office and restoration building) being included in the new building.

The new building took up the original station concept and retained the concept of the main building running parallel to the railway line with a connecting wing to the auxiliary building. The reception building was designed as a three-storey building with a hipped gable roof over a wide hollow and has a non-articulated facade that is only structured by a flat, three-axis central projection. The covered entrance was expanded into a vestibule in the 1980s.

future

By the end of 2021, Lienz train station is to become a barrier-free mobility center with a new bicycle and pedestrian underpass, which will connect the southern districts and surrounding communities with the city center.
