S-Bahn line S1: Lienz ↔ Friesach

Since 2008 local trains run every half hour (so-called Carinthia cycle) between Villach and Klagenfurt , the official commissioning of the S1 line (extension of the regular service to St. Veit an der Glan) took place on December 12, 2010. The S-Bahn system was through the closing of clock gaps further improved. Between Villach and St. Veit an der Glan there is a half hourly service, between Lienz - Spittal-Millstättersee - Villach - Klagenfurt am Wörthersee - St. Veit an der Glan - Friesach every hour. These details refer to working days, the offer is thinner on weekends and public holidays. The S-Bahn runs between Lienz and Spittal-Millstättersee on weekends only every 2 hours.

In the summer months the S1 Nightline runs between Spittal-Millstättersee and St. Veit every hour until 3:00 a.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays as well as for major events .

Current

Since the 2014/15 timetable change, there has been a new S-Bahn stop for the S1 called "Klagenfurt West" in the western urban area of Klagenfurt. It connects the east bay of the Wörthersee with the university , the lido , the Europapark and the P&R facility at Minimundus and also functions as a local transport hub (S-Bahn, Postbus, STW buses). The stop is currently the end of the city bus line 60 (Monday to Saturday), which runs every half hour via the University of Klagenfurt and Heiligengeistplatz in the direction of Steingasse.

The “Gummern” stop was closed on October 5, 2014 and is therefore no longer served (by the S1).

The S1 was extended to Lienz on December 13, 2015, which meant that it was possible to introduce an hourly service between Friesach and Lienz without having to change trains.

S-Bahn line S2: St. Veit an der Glan ↔ Rosenbach

Operation of the S2 in the section between Villach and St. Veit an der Glan started on December 11, 2011. Local trains run between Villach and Feldkirchen every hour, from Feldkirchen on to St. Veit an der Glan every two hours. This section of the route is condensed to an hourly cycle by a bus schedule coordinated with the Carinthian Transport Association .

The second section of the S2 between Villach and Rosenbach went into operation in summer 2012 and connects the regions around Ossiacher See, Warmbad Villach and Faaker See. Here an almost uninterrupted hourly cycle is run on weekdays. Buses complete the offer.

Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays there is a continuous two-hour service.

Current

Since 2015, the S2 Nightline has been running every hour between Feldkirchen in Carinthia and Ledenitzen until around 2:00 a.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays as well as on the Villach Church Day .

The state of Carinthia and ÖBB are investing 1.1 million euros in the construction of a new S-Bahn station in Villach Landskron. From December 2019 the new stop will be integrated into the operation of the S2 line.

S-Bahn line S21: Jesenice ↔ Villach

From June to the beginning of September 2019, trains run to and from Jesenice to Villach on weekends and public holidays. Among other things, these are designed for recreational traffic - this should bring about an improvement, especially for cycle tourism. CityShuttle sets are used with bicycle carts.

S-Bahn line S3: Weizelsdorf ↔ Klagenfurt Hbf

S3 express train set and historic NBiK rail bus at Weizelsdorf station

The S3 line started operating on August 1, 2011 in the section from Klagenfurt Hbf to Weizelsdorf. Feistritz / Rosental was originally intended as the end point of the S3. Due to planning errors, this could not be implemented, as the route to Feistritz / Rosental consists of a single, unsecured route block and all switches and signals at Maria Rain station have been expanded so that train crossings are not possible on the route used by the S3.

Currently, the train service on the S3 is operated from Monday to Friday (if working day) every hour (in the morning also every half hour). The S3 does not operate on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. In the catchment area of the S3, 6 communities are served by the call taxi “Go-Mobil”, namely Maria Rain, Köttmannsdorf, Ludmannsdorf, Feistritz / Rosental, Rosegg and St. Jakob / Rosental.

From August 1, 2011 to December 9, 2016 only the busy early train ran from Rosenbach via Feistritz / Rosental to Klagenfurt Hbf (from Monday to Friday, if working day).

Current

On October 27, 2015, the new train station between Klagenfurt Central Station and the former Viktring stop north of the Mössingerstraße level crossing went into operation. At the same time, the Viktring stop was closed. The name of the new station is "Klagenfurt Süd". Since the school center (HTL Mössingerstraße, BG / BRG Mössingerstraße) is in the immediate vicinity, it is mainly used for school traffic.

In the course of this new building, a new bus stop “Klagenfurt Süd” was built out of town and the existing bus stop “Feldhofgasse” was renamed “Klagenfurt Süd” to improve the connection to the city bus network. At the moment the transfer connections are not yet coordinated, so that you only have a few real S3 ↔ city bus transfers in the morning.

On December 13, 2015, a shuttle service was introduced between Klagenfurt main station and Klagenfurt Süd, making it the shortest S-Bahn line in Austria. No additional vehicles are required for this type of driving, as the short S3 can make full use of the standing time of the only vehicle.

The Weizelsdorf ↔ Rosenbach section was completely converted to bus transport in December 2016, which means that the last school train from Rosenbach to Klagenfurt was discontinued.

As part of the expansion of the Koralm Railway between Graz and Klagenfurt, the new “Klagenfurt-Ebenthal” S-Bahn station was also built. The new stop has been in full operation since January 1, 2013.

In the energy master plan of the state of Carinthia, electrification up to Weizelsdorf is addressed. In December 2015, it was explicitly announced in a press release by the State of Carinthia as a measure to be carried out by 2023.

At the southern city limits of Klagenfurt, the state of Carinthia and the ÖBB are investing 3.6 million euros in the construction of an S-Bahn stop in the area of the Lambichl intersection, with a Park & Ride facility and a bus reversing loop. The Rosentalbundesstraße, an important commuter route and the south of Klagenfurt, should be relieved of heavy traffic through the construction.

S-Bahn bus

The S-Bahn shuttle bus (S-Bahn bus) has been running every hour between Rosenbach, Feistritz / Rosental, Weizelsdorf and Ferlach since August 2011. In Weizelsdorf, the connection to and from the S3 is secured from both directions, as this station serves as a clock hub. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays there are only buses between Klagenfurt and the Rosental.

Future extension towards Ferlach

At times there were even considerations to extend line S3 from Weizelsdorf to Ferlach . However, this is currently not possible, as this branch line, which was closed by the ÖBB, was taken over by the "Nostalgiebahn in Kärnten" and would have to be completely modernized.

S-Bahn line S4: Hermagor ↔ Villach Hauptbahnhof

Current

Since December 11, 2016, a new line S4 has been set up on the Hermagor ↔ Arnoldstein ↔ Villach Hauptbahnhof section. The first steps for this were taken with the 2015/16 timetable change in the form of introducing a partial cycle between Hermagor and Villach main station.

Since summer 2017, the S4 Nightline has also been running between Hermagor and Villach until around 2:00 a.m.

S-Bahn bus

The upper Hermagor ↔ Kötschach-Mauthen section was converted to bus operation in December 2016. In this section of the route, as on the S3, there is an hourly bus service with connections to and from the S-Bahn.

S-Bahn line S41: Villach Hauptbahnhof ↔ Tarvisio Boscoverde

Since June 10, 2018, the new S-Bahn line S41 has been running between Villach and Tarvisio on Saturdays and public holidays. The courses are tailored to the connecting trains of the Italian State Railways in Tarvisio.

In summer 2019, the Thörl-Maglern stop, which was closed a few years ago, will be reactivated, but only served by the S41.

In the summer months, the S-Bahn operator offers extended operating times on the S1, S2 and S4 lines on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays as well as at major events (Villacher Kirchtag). The end of operation is between 2 and 3 a.m., depending on the station. Night surcharges are not charged.

Further planning

This information is derived from a press release by the State of Carinthia from mid-December 2015.

S-Bahn line S1: Lienz ↔ Friesach

In 2019 the “Penk” and “Oberfalkenstein” stops were closed.

S-Bahn line S2: St. Veit an der Glan ↔ Rosenbach

The new “Ledenitzen West” stop has been in operation since September 2, 2017, while the old Ledenitzen station has been closed to passenger traffic at the same time. In 2018 the stop was renamed Ledenitzen.

The “Winkl im Rosental” stop was canceled as part of the 2019/20 timetable change. The stops at the “Tiffen” station will also be discontinued in the next few years.

S-Bahn line S3: (Wolfsberg ↔ Bleiburg ↔) Klagenfurt ↔ Weizelsdorf

Planned expansion of the S3 by 2025
Planned expansion of the S3 by 2025

The line between Klagenfurt and Weizelsdorf is being modernized, the Maria Rain station is being improved and converted to the S-Bahn standard. A new stop in Lampichl is planned. The section is also to be electrified by 2023.

With the 2017/2018 timetable change, the trains between Klagenfurt and Wolfsberg will be listed as S-Bahn for the first time. At the same time, passenger traffic between Wolfsberg and Bad St. Leonhard was discontinued. As a special feature of this section, the S-Bahn run at weekends in a different minute than on weekdays. A continuous one-hour cycle is set up on weekdays, on weekends individual trains run as a cycle amplifier, in principle a two-hour cycle applies.

At a meeting between Governor Kaiser and the Slovenian Foreign Minister Erjavec on July 11, 2017, it was agreed to extend a S-Bahn line via Bleiburg to Prevalje and thus integrate the Slovenian region of Koroška into the Carinthian S-Bahn network. Further rail connections between Klagenfurt and Maribor are also to be created. Later, after the opening of the Koralmbahn and the associated restructuring of the entire rail network in Carinthia, these routes would no longer be added to the S3, but to the S1.
