Minimundus amusement park in Klagenfurt

Minimundus is a miniature park in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee in Carinthia , Austria , and shows 159 miniature models of well-known buildings, ships and trains from all continents on a scale of 1:25 on a 26,000 m² site . Only the model of Hochosterwitz Castle, built in 1959, and that of the passenger ship RMS Queen Mary , which would be 1:25 with 12.43 meters too long for the pond, were built on a smaller scale.

history

More than 15 million people have visited the park since it opened in 1958. The net proceeds go to the aid organization Rettet das Kind for children in need in Carinthia, which is the owner of the park. Since 2003, the planetarium , which has existed since 1977, could only be entered via Minimundus in summer, but this cooperation ended in 2007.

opening hours

Minimundus used to be closed around the cold half of the year.

For some years now, Minimundus has also been open daily as a winter wonderland in winter (around December, January, February). There are two closing times of several weeks each in November and March, during which renovations are carried out. (As of 2017/2018)

Choice of models

Over a third of the 159 models (as of 2019) show buildings of more regional importance from Austria. The others only partially cover the most important landmarks in the world.

The Sphinx + Chephren pyramid of Gizeh, Egypt, stylized in the current logo of the Minimundus , including the Sphinx , is not found as a model in the Minimundus on Lake Wörthersee, but could be seen in the Mini Mundus Bodensee , which was open until 2012 . In the model park on Lake Wörthersee, however, there is the 9-tier Mayan pyramid El Castillo by Chichén Itzá .

In 2015, Minimundus expanded its monument contingent.

In winter, some models are set up in other places, such as in shopping centers indoors and thus frost-free, while numerous models are placed under a protective roof in the park to protect them from snow and frost damage.

In winter, the water level around the Statue of Liberty has been lowered and an ice rink has been offered since 2017. For this purpose, this and other models are provided with protective, transparent bands . The "winter wonderland" offers entertainment indoors and animation in the reduced outdoor area.

Modelling

Original materials ( sandstone , tuff stone , steel, etc.) are used to build numerous models . After the building core has been cast from reinforced concrete , model builders wall up the individual, cut stones. The figures on the buildings are carved, such as the apostles on the front facade of St. Peter's Basilica . Windows are cast in epoxy resin as a series.

Most of the models are portable and will be exhibited in various locations during the park's winter break.

Cooperations

Minimundus Klagenfurt was temporarily involved in the Mini Mundus Bodensee as part of an international joint venture . Mini Mundus Bodensee, which ceased operations in 2013, was economically independent; there was a collaboration in the field of miniatures.
