Werner Suppan (born January 12, 1963 in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee ) is an Austrian lawyer and judge . Suppan, who works as a lawyer in Vienna, has been a substitute member of the Austrian Constitutional Court since 2017 .

education

Werner Suppan grew up in the Carinthian capital Klagenfurt , where he in 1981 on realistic branch of the First grammar school Klagenfurt graduated . In 1981/82 he then did military service in the Austrian Armed Forces and then began studying law at the University of Vienna . In 1987 he graduated from the Faculty of Law with a graduation as Magister iuris (Mag.iur.). Immediately afterwards, Suppan completed his legal practice in 1987/88 .

Professional background

Werner Suppan started his professional career in 1988 when he was accepted as a trainee lawyer in Michael Graff's office in Vienna. From this point on, the focus of his work was on media and privacy law, competition law and constitutional law. In 1991 and 1992 he passed the two-part bar exam and was then entered in 1993 on the list of attorneys of the Vienna Bar Association .

In 1994 Werner Suppan opened his own law firm for the first time, which he brought into the newly founded Mag. Werner Suppan Rechtsanwalts-GmbH in 2005. In 2007 he entered into a lawyer partnership and founded Suppan & Spiegl Rechtsanwälte GmbH together with a colleague . In 2016 this partnership was enlarged and renamed Suppan / Spiegl / Zeller Rechtsanwalts OG . In addition, he is currently a member of the supervisory board of Facultas Verlags- und Buchhandels AG , Wiener Zeitung GmbH and Wiener Zeitung Digital Publications GmbH. In addition, he was the managing president of Sportunion Wien until May 2017 , in May 2017 Peter McDonald was elected as his successor, Werner Suppan has been vice-president of Sportunion Wien since then.

After Irmgard Griss, previously nominated by the Federal Council , had to retire as a substitute member of the Constitutional Court at the end of 2016, the Federal Council nominated Werner Suppan as her successor in December 2016. Suppan was subsequently appointed as a substitute member by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen and sworn in by the President of the Constitutional Court, Gerhart Holzinger , on January 30, 2017 .

Political activity

From 2001 to 2010 Werner Suppan was an elected member of the district council in the Vienna district of Ottakring for the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) . In 2006 he was a substitute member of the ÖVP for the Vienna state election authority, in 2008 and 2013 each substitute member of the federal election authority in the Federal Ministry of the Interior. From 2011 to 2016, Suppan was also a member of the Housing Commission of the City of Vienna.
