location
The church building is located on the corner of Paradiesstrasse and Kirchstrasse on the northern outskirts of Schlich, directly at the exit towards D'horn.
history
At least until the 17th century, Schlich, D'horn, Merode and Obergeich belonged to the Echtz parish . A chapel in D'horn had been around for at least the 15th century. Since the end of 1659 D'horn kept its own church records, which indicates a certain independence of the community. From this point in time, the adoration of St. Martinus can also be proven. Even before that, from 1659 to around 1911, there was a parallel to St. Altar consecrated to George . This was headed by two early messengers who were paid for by a foundation of Wilhelm von Troyen. It is not known exactly when D'horn became an independent parish . In 1804 D'horn was already an independent parish.
In 1934 the new church in Schlich was the parish church of the parish and the parish seat was moved from D'horn to Schlich. Since then, the parish has often been referred to as St. Martinus D'horn zu Schlich .
Building history
The old parish church in D'horn was built in the 14./15. Century built as a single-nave hall church. Between the years 1710 and 1720 the small church was enlarged by adding a larger nave to the south side of the nave , which was now the main nave. This created a two-aisled facility. In 1855 the parish church was extended by a south aisle so that a three-aisled hall church was created. This church was destroyed in 1944 as a result of the Second World War.
Since the parish church in D'horn had become too small, it was decided to build a new parish church in the much larger neighboring village of Schlich. A plot of land directly at the exit to D'horn was chosen as the building site so that the way for the D'horn population is not too far. Today's Schlicher parish church was built from 1933 to 1934 according to plans by the Mönchengladbach architect Atta Weichert . The construction work was in the hands of the Birkesdorf contractor Hubert Iven. On March 19, 1934, the new parish church was consecrated. The church was slightly damaged in the Second World War.
Building description
St. Martinus is a two-aisled brick hall with a rectangular choir in the east and a bell tower on the north-west corner. The main nave has a gable roof , the south aisle a pent roof . The interior is spanned by flat wooden ceilings. The windows are arched.
Furnishing
In the church there is an organ made by the organ building firm Karl Bach from Aachen. It was built in 1949 and modified in 1960. The instrument has 20 registers and a free pipe prospectus.
The windows of the church are made by different artists. In the 1970s, Maria Katzgrau created some windows. In 1998, windows by the artist Georg Jansen-Winkeln were installed.
