Schlich is a district of Langerwehe in the Düren district , North Rhine-Westphalia .

place

With 2515 inhabitants , Schlich is the largest town in the “Herrschaft Merode” ( Obergeich , D'horn , Schlich, Merode , Echtz , Geich and Konzendorf ) and is one of the villages with the strongest population gains in the Düren district.

Historically, Schlich is a Franconian settlement. The name of the site is the Middle High German slich, slik, slijk, which means something like mud or mud . This is a plausible linguistic interpretation given the wealth of small bodies of water in this border area between the wooded foothills of the Eifel and the fertile plains of the Echtzer Loessplatte .

history

Old Vicariate

The earliest written evidence of Schlich comes from the years 1294 to 1323. In connection with the division of inheritance between the Lords of Merode , one of the Knights of Merode is also called Johann von " Slige ", Johann von "Sliche" or "her Johan van Slig" called.

On April 10, 1644, Lorraine troops left Eschweiler and spent the night in Schlich and Merode. They intended to leave the Jülich region in the morning of April 11th. At the same time, Hessian troops from Neuss , Kempen and Kalkar had set out for Rur . They saw the great Lorraine bonfires and decided to raid them. The surprise attack succeeded, the Hessians penetrated into the Lorraine camp and into the village of Schlich, which was soon blazing. The Lorraine people fled towards Merode, where they were held in check by some of the Hessians with the guns they had just captured . The remaining Hessians, however, plundered the Lorraine camp and the town of Schlich.

In autumn / winter 1666/67 a plague epidemic struck the places Schlich and Merode. A third of the population was killed. During this time, a bell was purchased through donations that still exists today. The “plague bell” hangs today in the Donatus Chapel in the center of the village.

In 1720 Heinrich Poel, Vicecuratus in D'horn, who came from Schlich, donated a chapel that was consecrated to St. Antonius . Associated with this was a benefit at a weekly fair. The chapel stood at today's intersection of Eifelstrasse - Weberstrasse - Antoniusstrasse (towards the school). It was badly damaged in World War II and demolished in 1950. In 1951 the Donatus Chapel was built just a few meters away.

At the same time, his sister-in-law, Bernardus Wettstein, who came from Merode, worked in the "Herrschaft". He was altarist and early messenger at the St. George altar in D'horn, chaplain at the chapel in Geich, provisional of the Geich hospital and rent master of the Counts of Merode. From 1721 to 1729 he built an apartment in today's Kirchstrasse in honor of his uncle Arnoldus Wettstein, who was also an altarist in D'horn and chaplain to Geich, the old vicarie , which is a listed building . The two also had a bell poured in 1721. It is the oldest bell in the parish church in Schlich.

In 1797 Schlich was also occupied by Napoleon's troops. Two young men from the town were forcibly recruited and lost their lives in Russia. In 1799, 200 adults over the age of twelve and around 120 children under the age of twelve lived in the village. All but five of the Jewish faith were Catholics.

On July 1, 1969, the municipalities of Merode and Schlich-D'horn were merged to form the new municipality of D'horn. On January 1, 1972, D'horn was incorporated into Langerwehe.

On January 1, 1984, a permanently manned ambulance was set up in Schlich, which was commissioned by the Düren district by the DRK . It was rebuilt in 2011 in the same place and now also includes the fire station.
