history

The name Heistern comes from the Celto-Romanic word hais = beech or from the Anglo-Saxon hees = forest. In the 14th century, Holzheim Castle and its owners, the Knights of the Heyster, were first mentioned in a document. There is little historical information about the place Hamich. However, the Roman name Hamiacum is known . There were finds from Roman times there. From 1798 to 1814 Mairie Heistern belonged to the canton of Eschweiler in the Département de la Roer . Hamich and Schevenhütte also belonged to the Mairie. In 1800 Hamich, Heistern and Schevenhütte had a total of 1,120 inhabitants. From 1815 on, Heistern and Hamich belonged independently to the Düren district and from 1932 together with Wenau to the Langerwehe office. On January 1, 1972, Wenau was incorporated into Langerwehe.
