action

Mohan Bhargava is a US non-residential Indian ( NRI ) who is employed by NASA as an expert on satellites. His life is American and he is offered the prospect of naturalization. Nevertheless, his thoughts have been back home lately. He thinks of his Kaveriamma (Kishori Balal) who raised him and became his support after the death of his parents. After he went to the United States to study, he left her in a retirement home. He would now like to correct this and bring Kaveri over to him.

He takes a vacation for 14 days and flies to Delhi to surprise Kaveriamma. But in the home he only learns that Kaveriamma was taken in by a woman years ago and now lives in the village of Charanpur.

So Mohan rents a mobile home and sets off for Charanpur. In this way, the NRI is rediscovering its home. When he finally meets Kaveriamma, it becomes apparent that life in the village has become alien to him. Mohan approaches the problems of his country of origin with electricity and illiteracy as well as the caste system from the perspective of an Indian living abroad who does not want to accept everything.

He learns that Kaveriamma is now taking care of Gita and her younger brother Chikku, both orphans like him. Gita heads the local school and as a woman fights against the prejudices of the ruling castes .

Mohan decides to support Gita, also to give Kaveriamma enough time to make a decision. He gets more and more involved in the life of Charanpur and its problems. His work at NASA is falling behind. However, after he shows the villagers that you have to take your fate into your own hands in order to achieve something, he returns to the States and leaves behind Gita, who now loves him - and so does he. After completing his project at NASA, however, he returned to India because he couldn't get his homeland out of his head.

background

Director Ashutosh Gowariker has to measure his follow-up project against his masterpiece Lagaan , which was nominated for an Oscar after all . And while the film manages this in its own way, it has so far been denied great success in India, which may also be due to the mostly negative reviews. Swades is a quiet voice for the sense of togetherness in a society separated by boxes . Ashutosh Gowariker reminds us of this, but his film was also successful overseas.
