Gene Callahan
Eugene "Gene" Callahan (born November 7, 1923 in Louisiana , † December 26, 1990 in Baton Rouge , Louisiana) was an American art director and set designer who won two Oscar for best production design and two more times for this Oscar as well as a BAFTA Film Award for Best Production Design.
Life
Callahan began his work as an art director and production designer in the Hollywood film industry in 1953 for the television film King Lear and worked on the production of nearly sixty films until his death.
He won his first Oscar in 1962 together with Harry Horner for best production design in the black and white film Sharks of the Big City (1961) by Robert Rossen with Paul Newman , Jackie Gleason and Piper Laurie in the lead roles .
At the Academy Awards in 1964 he won both the Oscar for best production design in the black and white film The Unconquerable (1963) by director Elia Kazan with Stathis Giallelis , Frank Wolff and Elena Karam and was also with Lyle R. Wheeler for the Oscar for best production design nominated in a color film for Der Kardinal (1963) by Otto Preminger with Tom Tryon , Carol Lynley and Dorothy Gish as the leading actors. The Greek painter and set designer Vassilis Photopoulos had designed around 75 sets for The Indomitable , but director Kazan had him removed from the credits so that only Gene Callahan was named instead, who then accepted the Oscar for the best set design alone.
He received another Oscar nomination for best production design in 1977 with Jack T. Collis and Jerry Wunderlich for The Last Tycoon (1976) by Elia Kazan with Robert De Niro , Ingrid Boulting and Tony Curtis .
In 1979 Callahan was also nominated with Willy Holt and Carmen Dillon for the BAFTA Film Award for best production design in Julia (1977) by Fred Zinnemann with Jane Fonda , Vanessa Redgrave and Jason Robards .
