Dorothy Gish
Dorothy Elizabeth Gish (born March 11, 1898 in Massillon , Ohio , † June 4, 1968 in Rapallo , Italy ) was an American actress and the sister of actress Lillian Gish .
Life
Dorothy Gish and her sister Lillian , who is five years her senior , were accommodated at an early age by their mother Mary, who also worked as an actress. In 1912 they got a job with the Biograph Company in New York and made their debut together in DW Griffith's short film An Unseen Enemy . Until 1914 she was part of the studio's permanent ensemble around her older sister, Blanche Sweet , Henry B. Walthall , Robert Harron , Kate Bruce , Mae Marshand others. After 1914, Gish worked for various studios and often appeared in Griffith's films with her older sister. Her best accomplishments include portraying a blind woman in Griffith's Orphans of the Storm , which was first rented in 1921. After this film she ended the collaboration with Griffith and starred again in 1924 at Lillian's side in Romola , directed by Henry King .
Although Dorothy never quite achieved the popularity of her older sister, she played numerous leading roles and was considered one of the pre-eminent comedy actresses in Hollywood in her day. In 1926 she went to Great Britain and took the title role in Nell Gwynne from Herbert Wilcox . She starred in three other films by this director and then largely withdrew from the film business. She later worked as a stage actress in England. Occasionally she returned to the big screen, for example in 1944 as the mother of Gail Russell in Our Hearts Were Young and Gay , a film adaptation of the memoir of actress Cornelia Otis Skinner, daughter of the well-known Broadway actor Otis Skinner. In the 1950s, Dorothy Gish was also featured in a number of television series as a guest actress. She had her last role in 1963 as the mother of the title character in The Cardinal by Otto Preminger .
Dorothy Gish was married to Canadian actor James Rennie from 1920 until their divorce in 1935 . She died of pneumonia in 1968 in Rapallo, Italy, at the age of 70. Dorothy and later her sister were buried in St. Bartholomew's Church in New York. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her cinematic work . The highly endowed Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize is named after the sisters .
