Orphans of the Storm is an American film drama from director David Wark Griffith from the year 1921 . It takes place during the French Revolution .

plot

The film is set in 18th century France. Louise, the illegitimate child of a nobleman, is abandoned by the nobleman in front of a church building. Poor farmer Girard, himself the father of a little daughter named Henriette, finds the girl and takes her home. Louise and Henriette grow up like sisters.

When both parents die of the plague and Louise goes blind, she travels to Paris with Henriette , because she hopes that she will be cured there. The French Revolution breaks out and Henriette is kidnapped by the Marquis de Praille. The Chevalier de Vauldrey comes to her aid, but is sentenced to death as a nobleman. Henriette is also threatened with guillotine execution . At the last moment she is rescued by Danton, a revolutionary, whose plea against bloodshed ends the film.

background

Two Orphans in the Storm is based on the play Les deux orphelines ( The Two Orphans ) by Adolphe d'Ennery and Eugène Cormon . David Wark Griffith wrote the screenplay under his pseudonym "Gaston de Tolignac" .

The film was the last of 42 collaborations between director Griffith and actress Lillian Gish over a period of ten years.

The shooting was complex. The setting included a 57,000 square meter reconstruction of historic Paris. Griffith imported 25 tons of props from France. Despite the high cost of production, Two Orphans in the Storm became a commercial success. The premiere took place on December 28, 1921. The film premiered in Germany in March 1923.

As in Intoleranz and other of his works, Griffith creates connections between historical and contemporary events in Two Orphans in the Storm . The situation during the French Revolution is an allegory of the October Revolution , the rise of Bolshevism, and the class struggle in the early 20th century.

criticism

The lexicon of international film positively notes: “Melodramatic silent film classic, laid out as a social moral painting that describes the suffering of the common people as well as the raging of the revolution that is becoming independent. The restored version of the silent film impresses with its optical brilliance and powerful virages and is accompanied by adequate new music. ” Prisma also finds words of praise:“ A drama with the brilliantly performing Lilian Gish by David Wark Griffith. The film offered Griffith the opportunity to draw a bitter portrait of the decadence of the Ancien Régimes and to dramatize the historical events of the French Revolution, especially in its perversion, the guillotine, which he staged in spectacular crowd scenes.
