Life

Not much is known about the life of Lee Kohlmar. As a teenager he emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1888 and was naturalized shortly afterwards. In 1902 he married Mina Wolferman (* 1884; † unknown), with whom he had the son Fred Kohlmar . Between 1912 and 1932 Kohlmar played ten plays on Broadway . In 1916 he made his film debut and subsequently also worked as a director, before concentrating entirely on his acting career from 1921. While he got bigger roles in the silent film era, Kohlmar's film appearances became smaller and smaller with the introduction of the sound film. In 1941 he had his last of at least 55 film roles on the side of the Marx Brothers . He died of a heart attack five years later at the age of 73.
