Fred Kohlmar

Fred Kohlmar (born August 10, 1905 in New York City , † October 13, 1969 in Hollywood , Los Angeles ) was an American film producer .

Life

Fred Kohlmar was born in New York City as the son of the German emigrants Lee Kohlmar and Mina Wolferman. He started out as a PR agent before gaining experience as a film producer as an assistant to Samuel Goldwyn . From the late 1930s he worked for various film studios such as 20th Century Fox , Paramount Pictures and Columbia Pictures . His repertoire included film noirs such as Feind im Dunkel ( The Dark Corner , 1946) as well as film musicals such as Pal Joey (1957) and comedies such as Noch Zimmer frei ( The Notorious Landlady , 1962). He worked with a number of important directors, including Joseph L. Mankiewicz , John Ford , George Cukor and William Wyler . In 1956, he was known for his production of the Columbia melodrama Picnic (1955) with William Holden and Kim Novak in the lead roles in the category Best Film for the Oscar nominated.

Kohlmar was married to Maxine Marshall until his death in 1969. His last production The only game in town ( The Only Game in Town , 1970) was published posthumously. His grave is in Hillside Memorial Park in Culver City .
