Phil Karlson

Phil Karlson, actually Philip N. Karlstein (born July 2, 1908 in Chicago , Illinois , † December 12, 1985 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American film director .

Life

As the son of a successful Irish actress, Phil Karlson got to know show business as a child. After working as an assistant director for a few years, he directed his first film at B-movie studio Monogram Pictures in 1944. Four years later he made I dance in your heart , in which Marilyn Monroe played her first leading role.

In the 1950s he made a number of film noirs , including three with John Payne . In the 1960s he successfully brought the singers Elvis Presley and Dean Martin to the screen in unfamiliar roles. Elvis played the tough boxer under the direction of Karlson in Kid Galahad - Hard Fists, Hot Love (1962), a remake of the classic Kid Galahad - With Hard Fists from 1937, while Dean Martin became the no less hard-nosed secret agent Matt Helm through Karlson and this was then allowed to embody in three other films.

Karlson directed the majority of his life B-movies . The movie Walking Tall (1973) with Joe Don Baker in the lead role was successful at the box office . 30 years later, a remake was made with Dwayne Johnson in the lead role, Walking Tall .
