Walking Tall - On Your Own (Original Title: Walking Tall ) is a film adaptation of a true story in a small US town by director Kevin Bray from 2004 and a remake of The Great from the Dark from 1973. The main role was played by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson .

action

Elite soldier Chris Vaughn returns to his hometown after an eight-year absence. Jay Hamilton, known to Vaughn from his school days, has meanwhile built up a thriving casino in the small town, whose financial monopoly gives him control over the town and its police force. Drugs are also sold to teenagers through casino security. After Vaughn notices a croupier cheating with his friends at a game night in the casino , there is an argument with the security staff, as a result of which Vaughn is overwhelmed and severely cut. The local sheriff, a supporter of the casino, later refuses to file a complaint and declares the case closed. However, after Vaughn's teenage nephew Pete had to be hospitalized for drug use from the casino, the situation escalated: The former elite soldier drove to the casino and took revenge on the gang by beating them up and devastating the casino's facility.

In the ensuing trial against Chris Vaughn, he offers the jury that he will run for sheriff and keep the town in order if he is not convicted. After his release, he arrests individual gang members for minor offenses and tries to find evidence against them - they now decide to murder Vaughn. In the showdown he faces his numerically superior opponents and with the help of his best friend Ray, who is at his side as deputy sheriff, brings order back to the small town.

Emergence

The script of Walking Tall is based on the true story of the US police officer Buford Pusser , who made a name for himself as a sheriff in Tennessee from 1964 to 1970 . Basically, the story actually took place that way, but was changed for the film and filled with numerous action elements.

The location of the film is a small town in Kitsap County in the US state of Washington in the northwest of the United States.

criticism

Lexicon of international film : "Solid, but facelessly staged action film that propagates violent crackdown on criminals."

Trivia

  • The Rock did all stunts themselves and, according to the director, better than all stunt doubles.
  • For the role of the military veteran, The Rock had to have his tattoos painted over and instead had a “classic military tattoo” painted on his arm.
  • WWE boss Vincent K. McMahon was involved in the making of the film. In addition to WWE, he runs the subsidiary WWE-Films , as many wrestlers in his league have already made film careers.
  • The American band Drive-By Truckers tells in their song "The Boys From Alabama" from the album "The Dirty South" the "other side" of the story of Walking Tall according to their own statements.

Sequels

In 2007 there were two sequels with Kevin Sorbo in the lead role. Both were released directly on DVD.
