Dwayne Douglas Johnson (* 2. May 1972 in Hayward , California ), also known as The Rock , is a US-American - Canadian actor and former wrestler . As a wrestler, he received the highest title in the WWE ten times , making him one of the most successful players in the league. Since his father Wayde Bowles and his grandfather Peter Maivia were also wrestlers, he was considered the first "third generation superstar".

Private life

Childhood and youth

Dwayne Johnson was born in 1972 as the son of the Afro-Canadian wrestler Wayde Bowles (called Rocky Johnson ; 1944-2020) and his wife Ata (born Maivia; * 1948), daughter of the Samoan wrestler Peter Maivia , in Hayward , California . He grew up in Hawaii and later moved to Florida , where he studied at the University of Miami . He became the star of his football team , the University of Miami Hurricanes. In 1991 he became a member of the NCAA National Championship team . However, he had to end his career due to a knee injury. Instead, he decided to start a career as a wrestler in 1995 after graduating in criminology . As a reference to his Hawaiian past, he had the story of his family tattooed on his left upper arm in 2003 in the Samoan tradition.

Johnson comes from a family very dedicated to wrestling. His father Rocky Johnson and his partner Tony Atlas formed the first dark-skinned tag team to win the World Tag Team Championship . His grandfather "High Chief" Peter Maivia had appeared in the 1960s and 1970s and had a mini-role in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice . About this grandfather Johnson is seen as a member of the Samoan wrestling family Anoaʻi , since Maivia was a blood brother of the family patriarch and these blood brotherhoods are of great importance among the South Sea peoples . Johnson is not related by blood, as is often wrongly assumed. Also belonged to James Heron (called Jimmy Snuka ) to his family, as this married one of his aunts. His cousin Taioalo Vaivai is a member of the United States' national rugby league team .

In 1997 Johnson married the future film producer Dany Garcia . The marriage that resulted in his daughter Simone Garcia Johnson divorced in 2008. Johnson's daughter was selected to be the 75th Golden Globe Ambassador in 2018 . Johnson is also the uncle of former American football player Kaluka Maiava . On August 18, 2019, Johnson married singer Lauren Hashian . From the ten-year relationship between the two, two daughters emerged.

Wrestling career

Beginnings

Johnson was trained by his father. For the first time he wrestled in 1995 under the name Flex Kavana for the United States Wrestling Association (USWA), where he the local tag team title twice won . The USWA served the then World Wrestling Federation (WWF) as a development league and Johnson was hired by this in 1996.

World Wrestling Federation / Entertainment (1996-2004)

Intercontinental Champion and Nation of Domination (1996-1998)

At the Survivor Series 1996 Johnson made his debut under the name "Rocky Maivia" in homage to his father and grandfather. As a result , he won the WWF Intercontinental Championship from Triple H on February 13, 1997 . On April 28, 1997 he gave the title to Owen Hart . Shortly thereafter, Johnson took a break.

On his return in the summer he joined the wrestling table Nation of Domination and called himself from then on "The Rock". On December 8, 1997, he won the Intercontinental title again. After a reign of several months, he lost the title in a ladder match at SummerSlam 1998 to Triple H, whereupon the stable was dissolved.

Promotion to the Main Event and WWF Champion (1997-2002)

After Johnson won the WWF Championship at the Survivor Series in 1998, he became a member of Vince McMahons Stable Corporation . After a long feud against Mankind , he finally lost his title to Steve Austin at WrestleMania XV .

Johnson left the corporation, and feuds ensued against Undertaker , Triple H, Billy Gunn , the British Bulldog, and Big Show . With Mick Foley he formed the Tag Team Rock'n'Sock-Connection in 1999, which won the Tag Team title three times. At the major event Backlash in 2000, he won the WWF Championship from Triple H, but lost it to Kurt Angle at No Mercy 2000 . At No Way Out he won the title back from Angle. At WrestleMania 17, Johnson lost the title again to Steve Austin.

Then Johnson took a break from wrestling. At SummerSlam 2001 Johnson returned and became part of the WWF, which, according to the storyline, was feuding against WCW , which was previously bought by the WWF. Programs with Booker T and Chris Jericho for the WCW title followed . Johnson won the title against Booker T but lost it to Chris Jericho. This was followed by a feud against the Hulk Hogan- led Stable New World Order , which Johnson ended at WrestleMania 18 with a victory over Hogan.

Between ring and canvas (2002-2004)

As a result, Johnson appeared only sporadically as an active wrestler, as he moved his film career to the fore.

He returned to the WWE in the summer of 2002. He defeated The Undertaker and Kurt Angle at the major Vengeance event in 2002 and won the WWE Champion title again. A month later he lost it to Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam . From February 2003, Johnson feuded again against Hulk Hogan, Steve Austin and Bill Goldberg . His last wrestling match for the time being led Johnson at the side of Mick Foley against Ric Flair , Batista and Randy Orton at WrestleMania XX .

Johnson announced in the online Washington Post in October 2006 that he would retire from wrestling entirely.

On March 29, 2008, he inducted his father Rocky Johnson and grandfather Peter Maivia into the WWE Hall of Fame as part of WrestleMania XXIV .

Return to WWE (since 2011)

Feud with John Cena (2011-2013)

During the February 14, 2011 edition of Raw, Johnson was featured as the host of WrestleMania XXVII (April 3, 2011) and returned to WWE after seven years. In the edition of Raw following this big event, a match against John Cena at WrestleMania XXVIII was announced the following year. Already at the Survivor Series on November 20, 2011 his ring comeback took place, in which he achieved a victory over The Awesome Truth ( The Miz & R-Truth ) in a tag team match alongside Cena . The feud against Cena culminated at WrestleMania XXVIII on April 1, 2012 with a Johnson victory.

On July 23, 2012, Johnson appeared again in the 1,000th episode of RAW . He announced that he would compete against the reigning WWE Champion at the 2013 Royal Rumble . On January 27, 2013 he won a match against CM Punk at the Royal Rumble and received the WWE Championship for the eighth time. At Elimination Chamber Johnson was the title for the first time successfully defend, and then in the subsequent RAW -Issue to present on 18 February a redesigned WWE championship belt. He gave the title back to John Cena at WrestleMania XXIX .

Occasional appearances and resignation (since 2014)

In 2014 Johnson made a brief guest appearance at the opening of WrestleMania XXX . This was followed by appearances and occasional matches or short feuds, e.g. B. against The Wyatt Family or The New Day (with the support of the Usos ).

On August 3, 2019, he also officially announced his retirement from wrestling : After weeks of speculation, Johnson announced on September 30, 2019 that he would perform for the last time on October 4, on the occasion of SmackDown's 20th anniversary . This was his first appearance on this WWE format since October 2014 and his first television appearance since April 2016.

Acting career

Johnson gained his first experience as an actor in TV series. He played his father in an episode of The Roaring Seventies and played an alien gladiator in an episode of Star Trek: Spaceship Voyager .

In 2000, the single It Doesn't Matter from the album The Ecleftic: 2 Sides II a Book by Wyclef Jean was released, which was recorded with Johnson and Melky Sedeck. In 2001 he showed talent as an action actor with his role as the Akkadian assassin Mathayus in The Mummy Returns , so it was decided to make a prequel for this film . After filming The Scorpion King , the director praised him with the words: “This guy has it all. He's just a born action hero. ”He benefited from his wrestling experience, because Johnson does all stunts himself and, according to his director, better than many stunt doubles .

Two more action films followed with Welcome to the Jungle and Walking Tall . Johnson was nominated for the MTV Movie Award with the film Welcome to the Jungle . The October 2005 issue of Widescreen magazine titled him as the successor to Arnold Schwarzenegger .

In 2005 he played a supporting role in Be Cool - Everyone's Hunting for the Next Big Hit .

In October 2005, the science fiction horror film Doom (based on the computer game of the same name ), in which Johnson plays the leader of a military security and rescue force , was released in the USA .

He then played in Southland Tales , which was nominated for the 2006 Cannes Film Festival for the Golden Palm . Critics rated the film mostly negative.

In the drama Game on Parole , which came out in theaters in September 2006, he played a guard in a juvenile prison. In 2007, the Disney comedy Daddy Without a Plan appeared , in which he plays the successful quarterback of a football team who is surprisingly confronted with the existence of a daughter.

In 2007 he had in the Hannah Montana episode I want, I want, I want! (Episode 2x17) a self-deprecating guest role as himself. In 2008 Johnson played double agent Agent 23 in the action comedy Get Smart .

In the CGI animation film Planet 51 , which was released in theaters in 2009, he lent his voice to the American astronaut Chuck Baker in the original English version . In 2011 he played, alongside Billy Bob Thornton , the driver in Faster and portrayed the cop Luke Hobbs in Fast & Furious Five . He also played this role in the sequels Fast & Furious 6 (2013), Fast & Furious 7 ( 2015) and Fast & Furious 8 (2017).

In 2012 he founded the film production company Seven Bucks Productions with his former wife Dany Garcia , which has since produced a large number of projects with Johnson.

In the 8th season of the series Family Guy , he (real) has a cameo short appearance in which he is supposed to re-enact sex between the main characters of the series with dolls.

Johnson sang the song You're Welcome for the soundtrack of the Disney animated film Vaiana , in which he lends his voice to the character of Māui . With this single, he first placed on the Billboard Hot 100 (ranked 83rd) in December 2016 , was awarded a triple-platinum record in June 2019 and was certified platinum in the United Kingdom in November 2019 .

Johnson currently tops the list of the world's best paid actors. In 2016, he earned $ 64.5 million, according to Forbes business magazine, compared with $ 87.5 million from June 2019 to June 2020.
