action
When a UFO crashes near Las Vegas , government official Henry Burke sends a team to investigate the crash site. It turns out that the inmates escaped on a bus to Las Vegas.
In Las Vegas the taxi driver Jack Bruno drives the failed astrophysicist Dr. Alex Friedman to a UFO congress where she wants to give a lecture on scientifically based UFO theories. Later, two “extraterrestrial” youths named Sara and Seth sit in the same taxi and offer Jack a large sum of money for a trip to a destination in the desert. On the way there, Burke and his team try to catch the three. After Burke was shaken off after a violent chase, the three reach their destination, an abandoned house. Seth and Sara pay Jack off, but Jack is not happy about the tip, which is far too high, and wants to give it back to them. They are attacked in the house in which the two find the reason for their earth visit. On the run from the creature "Siphon", Jack learns that it is an assassin who is supposed to kill Sara and Seth.
The two tell Jack that they come from a distant planet. Her parents carried out experiments on earth to find a solution to an environmental problem on their own planet that is so serious that the population is already expecting the exodus. In fact, there is a successful experiment in the abandoned house that the two children want to bring to their home world. This in turn is to be prevented by Siphon, who was sent by the alien military, who are more interested in a "faster solution" - the colonization of the earth - and have therefore interned Seth and Sarah's parents beforehand.
On the way back to Las Vegas, the three of them stop in a small town to have damage to the vehicle repaired. When they are in a restaurant, Burke and his people storm it. However, a waitress helps them escape. The three continue to Las Vegas and look for Dr. Alex Friedman at the UFO Congress. With the support of friends of Dr. Friedman, Sara and Seth can locate their spaceship in the "magic mountain". This is actually a top secret military base.
When they arrive at the magical mountain, the four are caught by Burke's men and Sara and Seth are arrested as "illegal aliens". Jack and Alex are also taken away, but shortly afterwards they can free themselves with a ruse. When they want to free Seth and Sara, Siphon attacks the base, so that Burke's men are bound and the four can go to the hangar in which the ship of Sara and Seth is. The four of them can escape, but Siphon gets into the spaceship, where he is fought by Jack and Seth until Jack can throw him into the ship's drive. After Sara and Seth set Jack and Alex down again, Sara gives Jack a tracking device, which is activated when he returns and the ability to read minds.
In the credits, Jack and Alex, who are now a couple, present their successful book “The Hunt to the Magic Mountain” at a UFO convention. In the final scene, the two of them drive in the car Jack always dreamed of, a Ford Mustang similar to the one Steve McQueen drives in the movie Bullitt . As they drive away, the device the children gave Jack activates.
production
In July 2007, Walt Disney Pictures engaged Andy Fickman to direct a modern remake of Escape to the Witch Mountain based on a script by Matt Lopez. The following August, Dwayne Johnson was won for the lead role, so filming was scheduled to start in March 2008. Fickman describes the film not as a remake, but as "a new chapter in the world of 'Witch Mountain'" ". He describes the book on which the films are based as "a cool dark thriller". In March 2008, the filmmakers took a new script written by Mark Bomback. The film was renamed and filming began in Los Angeles that month.
The Convention Center in Pomona ( California ) was used as the backdrop for UFO Expo 9, and the interior of the magical mountain was designed after photographs from a tour of the NORAD coordination office in Cheyenne Mountain . Fickman sought help from UFO experts, the military, and CIA advisors to help create the film. He also introduced a new element in the form of the alien creature Siphon. This was conceived by the design team that also worked for Alien and Predator .
music
The soundtrack was written by Trevor Rabin , who recorded it with a 78-member ensemble and a 24-member choir. Two of the songs were written by the country and western band Brokedown Cadillac , which can also be seen briefly in the opening sequence.
Trivia
