The Love of a Summer is an American film from 1968. The film was based on the novel A Jest of God by Margaret Laurence .

action

Rachel Cameron, a teacher, lives in a small town in New England . She lives with her widowed mother. Every day she takes care of her lonely mother and the school children. There is no other purpose in life for Rachel. Her closest friend is the also unmarried teacher Calla Mackie. Calla Mackie arranges for shy Rachel to go to a meeting organized by the Reverend Wood. There Rachel is impressed by a priest who tries to convince her to show her innermost feelings too. This and the sudden advances made by Calla Mackie almost bring her to the brink of a nervous breakdown. Confused, she surrenders to former school friend Nick Kazlik. For the 35-year-old woman, meeting Nick is the first sexual experience in her life. Rachel now dreams of a romantic future with Nick Kazlik and is bitterly disappointed by him. He ends the relationship all of a sudden. A little later Rachel believes she is pregnant. However, she is not shaken by the expected child and decides to reshape her life. In anticipation of the child, she wants to leave New England and bear the child outside of the social pressures of the small town. Calla helps her get a new job in Oregon . When it turns out that Rachel is not pregnant but has an abdominal disease, it turns out that Rachel is strengthened by the new experiences. She leaves home without expecting a child and moves to Oregon.

The filming took place in the state of Connecticut . The film was released in US cinemas in August 1968 and in German cinemas in November 1968. The Love of a Summer was the directorial debut of the actor Paul Newman.

The original English version was released on DVD in 2009 by Warner Bros. Entertainment .

Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman received a 1969 Golden Globe Award for acting and directing. They also received the New York Film Critics Circle Award . Joanne Woodward and Estelle Parsons also received an Oscar nomination . The film was also nominated for an Oscar in the categories of Best Picture and Best Screenplay. Joanne Woodward also received a 1969 British Film Award nomination .
