Jerome Moross

Jerome Moross (born August 1, 1913 in Brooklyn , New York , † July 25, 1983 in Miami , Florida ) was an American composer and conductor . He created some musical works for the cinema in the 1950s and 1960s. Including compositions for films such as Wide Land , Adventure on the Mississippi , The Cardinal , The Normans Are Coming or The Love of a Summer .

life and career

Jerome Moross was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1913. Musically gifted, he began to play as an accomplished pianist at the age of five and began composing his own works at the age of eight. His first major composition by Paean was premiered in 1930 by Bernard Herrmann . Jerome Moross graduated from New York University at the age of eighteen .

In the mid-1930s he began writing the music for numerous Broadway shows. From 1940 on, he relocated his activities as arranger, orchestrator and conductor to Hollywood . There he often worked with other well-known composers such as Aaron Copland , Franz Waxman or Hugo Friedhofer . Since 1948 Moross has also composed film scores himself. He wrote the music for films like City in a Stranglehold , The Proud Rebel , The Commandant , A Stranger Arrived , The Cardinal , Gwangi's Revenge or for the film drama Hail, Hero! . In 1959 he was honored with an Oscar nomination for his composition for the western Weites Land by director William Wyler with Gregory Peck and Charlton Heston in the leading roles .

Jerome Moross was married to Hazel Abrams from 1939 until his death. Moross died on July 25, 1983 at the age of 69 in Miami, Florida.
