Joe Kingman is a famous and well-paid quarterback for a Boston football team . He is the star of the team preparing for the championship play-offs . He describes football as the only important thing in his life, enjoys throwing parties and is a self- loving egomaniac . Kingman suddenly learns that he has an eight-year-old daughter, Peyton Kelly, when she stands at his door one day and asks him to look after her while her mother is abroad. As proof, she has a letter from his ex-wife Sara and the birth certificate with her, so that Joe has to accept the new situation for better or worse.
He is initially overwhelmed by this because he is not used to taking responsibility for someone else. So he forgets her at the opening ceremony of his new restaurant, which appears in the press the next morning and makes his manager Stella Peck extremely angry because he cannot afford these headlines as an advertising medium. In general, the lively Peyton is a thorn in the side of the manager, who fears for the image and income of her client. At a short-term press conference, Peyton shows himself to be highly professional and eloquent and describes the surprised Joe as the best daddy in the world, who taught her that you can do anything if you want to. The journalists present are immediately very impressed by the little girl.
When Joe takes his daughter to a ballet school , he meets the head of the school, Monique Vasquez. She realizes his irresponsibility, solicits his support and gives him a role in the school's upcoming ballet performance. During the training together, Monique and Joe become friends more and more. When Joe wants to go on a date with a fleeting love affair, Peyton intervenes and an argument ensues, in which Peyton reproaches him for being selfish and selfish. After Joe is home alone again, he finds letters from his late ex-wife in a forgotten suitcase, who apologize for not telling him about their daughter in order not to stand in the way of his ambitious career. Studying recordings of past moves, he realizes his selfishness on the field and receives advice from a friend to prove to his daughter that he loves her. In television interviews, he openly and honestly confesses that his daughter means everything to him. In the decisive championship game, Joe Kingman plays unfocused and is tackled hard , dislocating his shoulder and having to be replaced during the break. In the treatment room, Peyton and Karen visit him, who remind him that nothing is impossible for Joe Kingman. He returns to the field and gives his team the victory four seconds before the end with a precise pass to a free-standing teammate.
