Black Rock State Park

The Black Rock State Park is a State Park in the middle between Torrington and Watertown in Litchfield County in Connecticut , USA. The 1.8 km² park is named after the black rock formations that have been created by graphite mining since 1657. Arrowheads and stone tools of the Mohegan , Paugussett , and Tunxis Indians have also been found in the area. The Mattatuck State Forest lies south of the park, which opened in 1926, and both areas are connected by the Mattatuck Trail. Black Rock Lake and Black Rock Pond are accessible via additional hiking trails. Oak, pine and hemlock dominate the tree population, the waters are stocked with trout for anglers. Swimming, camping, and hiking are the most popular recreational activities in the park. The Black Rock cliff has views of the Naugatuck Valley , Watertown and Thomaston .

On July 10, 1989, the park was hit by a tornado . A 12-year-old girl was fatally injured by falling trees.
