Bruno Trentin (born December 9, 1926 in Pavie , Département Gers , † August 23, 2007 in Rome ) was general secretary of the Italian metalworkers ' union FIOM and the trade union confederation CGIL . He was a member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2004 .

Life

Bruno Trentin was a son of the Italian anti-fascist Silvio Trentin . He was born in France in 1926 after his family had fled Italy the year before. In exile, his father, a former professor of law, continued to be politically active and joined the resistance movement Giustizia e Libertà . This influenced Bruno Trentin in his youth, he also joined the organization and was arrested by the German occupiers at the age of 15 for rebellious activities.

After the armistice of Cassibile on September 8, 1943, the family returned to Italy and both father and son joined the Resistancea . On November 19, 1943, both were arrested in Padua for a month. Shortly afterwards Silvio Trentin died and Bruno took over the leadership of a partisan brigade of the Giustizia e Libertà at the age of 17.

After the end of the Second World War , he studied law at the University of Padua and later also at Harvard University . In 1949 he graduated and joined the trade union confederation CGIL . He began to work in the study center of the CGIL and in 1950 he joined the Communist Party of Italy ( Partito Comunista Italiano ). He was a member of the Central Committee from 1960 to 1973.

In 1960 Trentin was elected to the city council in Rome, from 1962 to 1972 he was a member of the Italian parliament . However, he did not run for this political office again, citing the incompatibility with his trade union activities as the reason. Trentin destroyed essential elements of a Marxist-Leninist party and trade union interpretation. The thesis that the development of trade union forms of consciousness is limited in principle is untenable for him. This also lays the foundation for a traditional division of tasks between the trade unions and the party.

As early as 1958, Trentin was deputy general secretary of the CGIL, and from 1962 to 1977 he was general secretary of the metalworking unions FIOM and FLM. From 1988 to 1994 he headed the CGIL and was involved in important discussions on wage policy . Together with the CISL and UIL, he campaigned for the abolition of the Scala mobile , a legal clause according to which wages should automatically follow inflation. Trentin thus sparked heated discussions within its own ranks. After signing the contract to abolish Scala mobile, he immediately resigned from his post.

From 1994 to 2000 Trentin was a member of the Democratici di Sinistra in the European Parliament . He died in Rome on August 23, 2007 of pneumonia.

He was an enthusiastic mountaineer and a member of the Alpine Club.

"If we fail to reform the collective bargaining agreements in Europe and create a European trade union confederation with competencies, there is a risk that all trade union efforts will remain propaganda with no practical relevance."
