The Unione Italiana del Lavoro (UIL) (German: Italian Labor Union) is one of the largest trade union alliances in Italy . The trade union federation should not be confused with the trade union of the same name, which existed from 1918 to 1925.

The UIL is a member of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC). In the membership list of the IGB, membership is given as 2,230,396 (as of November 2017).

origin

In the 1950s, the largest Italian trade union confederation, CGIL, moved politically closer to the Italian Communist Party . For this reason, a group of Catholic and Social Democrat-inspired trade unionists split off and founded the CISL in 1948 . After the PSLI merged with the PSU to form the PSDI , the demand arose to found a separate union that was neither communist nor denominational. On March 5, 1950, the Federazione Italiana del Lavoro was founded, which later became the Unione Italiana del Lavoro and is largely oriented towards social democracy.

In recent years, the CISL and the UIL have largely been united in the industrial action , whereas a latent controversy has developed on the CGIL .

From 1964 to 1976 the Autonomous South Tyrolean Trade Union Federation (ASGB) was linked to the UIL as an offshoot for German- and Ladin-speaking employees because of the workers' statute at the time.
