Mattatuck State Forest is a state forest in the US state of Connecticut in the area of the parishes of Waterbury , Plymouth , Thomaston , Watertown , Litchfield and Harwinton . The forest is spread over twenty individual parcels.
geography
The Naugatuck River runs through the area. The largest parcel of the forest is about 1 mile north of Waterbury. The Leatherman's Cave , which is named after a tramp of the late 19th century, is situated in the area of Thomaston on Mattatuck Trail , just north of the intersection of Jericho Trail . Notable landmarks include Lake Plymouth , Mount Tobe , Bidwell Hill, and the Whitestone Cliffs .
Freetime activities
The forest is criss-crossed by several blue-blazed trails , including the Jericho Trail , Hancock Brook Trail , Mattatuck Trail and Whitestone Cliffs Trail . The Mattatuck Trail also connects the forest with Black Rock State Park . The Whitestone rock climbing area is located in the largest parcel of the forest east of the Naugatuck River. The cliffs rise up to 34 m (50 ft) and top roping techniques can be used.
