The Nassahegon State Forest , (also: Nassahegan State Forest ,) is a state forest in the US state of Connecticut in the area of the municipality of Burlington .

geography

The mountainous terrain is dominated by Wildcat Mountain at 741 ft (226 m) above sea level . The Spielman Highway (Hw 4) limits the forest area to the north . The waters in the State Forest are all part of the Farmington River catchment area, even if they initially run in different directions. Bradley Brook and Punch Brook flow north, while Wildcat Brook and Whigville Brook with their tributaries drain south. However, they flow into the Pequabuck River , which flows into the Farmington River in Farmington . On Punch Brook is also the Burlington Trout Hatchery and the Nassahegan Recreational Complex . Outside the forest area on Johnnycake Mountain further west is the Burlington Lookout Tower .

Freetime activities

The forest is used for logging, but still offers opportunities for hunting, hiking and bird watching. It is crossed by some blue-blazed trails .

Burlington Trout Hatchery

The Burlington Trout Hatchery ( Burlington State Fish Hatchery ), which, like the forest, is managed by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection , is located on Belden Road , at Punch Brook . The facility has buildings for hatching the fish eggs, several fish ponds and a short nature trail. The fish farm opened in 1923. Today trout and rainbow trout are pulled there, which are released in many bodies of water to make fishing possible. The fish farm is open every day.
