James L. Goodwin State Forest is a state forest in the US state of Connecticut in the area of ​​the parishes of Hampton and Chaplin . James L. Goodwin , on whose initiative the Massacoe State Forest was established, bequeathed his forest properties, which he had managed since 1913, to the state in 1964. That was the beginning of the forest area, which today covers 2003 acre (811 ha).

The forest area includes Pine Acres Lake , Black Spruce Pond , and Darling Pond . The Natchaug River , which Route 198 also follows, crosses the forest. in the southwest the Edward Garrison Park and in the north the Natchaug State Forest and the Nathaniel Lyon Memorial State Park directly adjoin the forest area. Additional state park parcels connect south with the Air Line State Park Trail and Beaver Brook State Park . The highest point is Bear Hill at 750 ft (228 m) above sea level .

Freetime activities

The forest covers approximately 2000 acres and includes Pine Acres Lake, which is 189 acres (76.5 hectares). Black Spruce Pond is 18 acres (7.2 hectares) and Brown Hill Pond is 14 acres (5.7 hectares). All lakes are open for fishing and boating. 14 mi (22.5 km) of hiking trails are designated that can be used for hiking, skiing and horse riding. The trails are part of the Blue-Blazed Trails system and are linked to the Natchaug Trail and the Air Line State Park Trail .

James L. Goodwin Conservation Center

The Goodwin Forest Conservation Education Center is an educational facility operated by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection in partnership with the Connecticut Forest and Park Association . There are events for schools and visitors. Forest management courses are also offered for landowners, forest workers and forest workers . The center has a wildlife garden, a small nature museum and a campsite for youth groups on the south bank of Pine Acres Pond .
