Beaver Brook State Park is a state park in the area of the parishes of Windham and Chaplin in the US state of Connecticut . The park area includes Bibbins Pond , also known as Beaver Brook Pond . The area includes the Beaver Brook river valley north of the pond and is closed to the north by the Air Line State Park Trail . The state park was established in 1955 with a donation of 165 acres (66.8 hectares) from H. Keeney Lathrop. Today it covers 162 ha.

geography

The park area begins in the north along the Ames Brook or the Air Line State Park Trail . Northwest of the park is Beaver Hill . From there the park stretches to the south. In the park are the sources of Beaver Brooks , the course of which the park follows. The Beaver Brook leaves the park at its southern end with the outflow from Bibins Pond . The Beaver Brook flows south for a few kilometers before flowing into the Merrick Brook , which in turn flows into the Shetucket River . The flat hilly area of the park is covered by mixed forest.

history

It is likely that there used to be a beaver dam in the area of the park. However, this can no longer be verified. In 1955, H. Keeney Lathrop donated 165 acres of land to the State of Connecticut. Before that, the ponds belonging to it were probably expanded to serve as fishing grounds. The Connecticut State Register and Manual recorded an immense expansion of the park area from 1955 to 1957 to 391 acres. The park reached its current size of 401 acres as early as 1960. In 2013, the State of Connecticut put out a tender to repair Bibbins Pond Dam.

Freetime activities

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has listed Beaver Brook State Park as an undeveloped walk-in park with hunting opportunities. The Flyfisher's Guide to Connecticut lists Beaver Brook as a premier trout body. There are no seasonal fishing restrictions, but only catch and release is allowed. And you can only fish with artificial flies and barbed hooks. Only motorless boats are allowed on the pond. Beaver Brook State Park is connected to the Air Line State Park Trail . There is also a geocache in the park . In 1994 Sean Wozniak achieved a state record in fishing for brook trout .

Access to the park is at the junction of Connecticut Route 203 and Connecticut Route 14 in Windham, or after a distance of approximately 1 km on Route 14 east and then via a side street that leads to the pond after approximately 4 km the left side leads.

annotation

The Day reported that the first donation was 175 acres, but State of Connecticut lists only 165 acres in the official 1955 publication.
