The Shetucket River is a tributary of the Thames River in the US state of Connecticut . It arises from the confluence of the Willimantic and Natchaug Rivers and runs for a length of 20.4 mi (33 km) to the southeast before it flows into the Thames River at Norwich .
geography
The river arises in the Crotch of the River area on the southeastern edge of Willimantic , where the Natchaug River flows into the Willimantic River after a large bend. From there it extends to the southeast and bends further east on the border of New London County to find a passage through the mountain range of Pleasure Hill . This is where the Susquehanna Plains ( ⊙ ) were created. The river is also dammed there to generate energy. Then it turns stronger to the south again and is dammed up to Occum Reservoir , whereupon the Little River joins from the left and north. The following stretch of river is already part of the municipality of Norwich. About 4 mi (6 km) northeast of the city, the larger Quinebaug River flows in from the left and east and widens the river to an estuary which stretches another 5 mi (8 km) to the south before it merges with the Yantic River and that Forms Thames Estuary south of Norwich.

natural reserve
The river runs through a particularly natural area of southern New England . The industrial areas in the area have hardly influenced it, so parts of the river valley have been protected by the federal government as the Quinebaug and Shetucket Rivers Valley National Heritage Corridor . The National Park Service describes the valley as "last green valley" the "last green valley" in the megalopolis between Boston and Washington . In contrast to the surrounding areas, the valley appears as a dark strip on night recordings by satellite .
Freetime activities
The entire river, as well as the lower part of the Natchaug River , one of its origins, are popular boat routes. There are entry points in several places:

- Recreation Park (Plains Road - Windham)
- Baltic Riverside Park (Route 97 - Sprague)
- Occum Dam canoe portage (Sprague)
- Lisbon Canoe Launch (Route 169 - Lisbon)
- Greenville Dam canoe portage (Norwich)
- Howard Brown Park (Norwich)
