The Quinebaug River is a river in south-central Massachusetts and east Connecticut with a drainage basin that extends to Rhode Island . The name "Quinebaug" originated from a term used by the indigenous Indians that was spoken about Qunnubbâgge , Quinibauge , or similar. It means "long pond" (from qunni- = long, -paug = pond). The river is one of the eponymous rivers of the Quinebaug and Shetucket Rivers Valley National Heritage Corridor .

course

The river is approximately 69 mi (111 km) long. It rises from East Brimfield Lake and other ponds northwest of Sturbridge, Massachusetts . It runs generally southeast and south through Connecticut ( Putnam , Danielson , Plainfield , Canterbury and Jewett City ). The river pours into Aspinook Pond , which stretches from Canterbury to Jewett City, and soon flows into the Shetucket River from left and east at Quinebaug Falls . The confluence is northeast of Norwich . The Shetucket feeds its waters over the Thames River to Long Island Sound . The Quinbaug River is dammed in various places along the upper reaches: East Brimfield Dam , Westville Dam and West Thompson Dam are used for flood control and there are a number of small dams that are used to generate hydropower.
