Massacoe State Forest is a state forest in the US state of Connecticut in the area of the municipality of Simsbury . The forest consists of two parcels: the Great Pond Block , around the Great Pond , and the Massacoe Block , which is adjacent to Stratton Brook State Park .
Surname
The Massacoe State Forest is named after a Wappinger clan who lived in the area.
geography
The two areas of the forest are in the densely populated suburban area of Simsbury. Great Pond itself is 36 acres (15 hectares) and the surrounding forest is 297 acres (120 hectares). The second parcel is directly adjacent to Stratton Brook State Park . Originally this area served as a test area to research how to deal with frequent forest fires on the railway lines. Onion Mountain Park is immediately adjacent to the west .
history
The history of the forest is linked to James L. Goodwin , who as a forest pioneer recognized the need for natural recreational areas early on. The James L. Goodwin State Forest in eastern Connecticut is named after him. He ran a tree nursery south of the Great Pond, which he bequeathed to the State of Connecticut after his death and which formed the core of today's State Forest.
Freetime activities
In the forest you can go hiking and fishing, the large lake also attracts a large number of water and migratory birds. The former railway line is now a popular walk.
