Natchaug State Forest is a state forest in the US state of Connecticut in northwest Windham County . Its parcels are spread over the area of ​​six parishes. The Natchaug River runs north to south along the western boundary of the largest forest parcel. James L. Goodwin State Forest joins immediately to the south.

Surname

The name comes from the Algonquin and means something like: "Land between the rivers". It originally only referred to the area at the junction of the Bigelow River and Still River , from which the Natchaug River arises.

The forest is located in northwest Windham County, in the area of ​​the six parishes Ashford , Brooklyn , Chaplin , Eastford , Hampton , Pomfret . It belongs to the ecoregion of the Northeastern coastal forests. In the forest there is a fireplace as a remnant of a historic house. The house was the birthplace of General Nathaniel Lyon from the Civil War . The Hampton Reservoir is in the area and the Air Line State Park Trail accompanies part of the southern border.

Freetime activities

The large forest areas have an extensive system of hiking trails that can be used for all types of outdoor sports. Hiking trails include the Natchaug Trail and the Civilian Conservation Corps Loop.
