Biographical background

The film tells the true life story of the family of the wrestler "Rowdy" Ricky Knight. His daughter Saraya-Jade Bevis (picture) later also became a professional wrestler

The film tells the real life story of Norwich wrestler "Rowdy" Ricky Knight and his family. His daughter Saraya-Jade Bevis , who later also became a professional wrestler, is known by her ring name Britani Knight or Paige and performs weekly in WWE wrestling shows. Her greatest successes to date were the NXT Women's Championship and a two-time winner of the WWE Divas Championship. Since mid-January 2018, she has not been in the ring due to an injury and ended her career.

production

The film was inspired by a Channel 4- produced documentary titled The Wrestlers: Fighting With My Family and jointly produced by Seven Bucks Productions, Misher Films, WWE Studios and Film4. The film critic Antje Wessels explains about the film title that it is to be understood absolutely ambiguously, as the tragic comedy does not just tell of a sports-loving family and the rise of an individual athlete, as is typical for sports films, the fights that the individual family members are fighting are primarily of an emotional nature. The focus here is primarily on the siblings Zak and Paige, whose close bond is being put to the test by Paige's career path.

It was directed by Stephen Merchant , who also wrote the screenplay and played Hugh in the film. In February 2017, the cast of Vince Vaughn , who plays Hutch in the film, was revealed. At the same time, Lena Headey joined the crew that played Saraya's mother Julia Knight. Nick Frost took on the role of her husband and ex-wrestler Ricky Knight . Jack Lowden plays their son Zak. Dwayne Johnson , who accompanies the film as executive producer, appears in the film as himself.

The film was shot in the UK and USA. In Norwich, England, they shot at Norwich Market and Mousehold Heath, in Great Yarmouth on the promenade and also in the town of Bracknell. In the USA, the shooting took place in Santa Clarita, California. Filming ended in Great Yarmouth in early 2017.

The film music was composed by Vik Sharma . The soundtrack, which comprises a total of 26 pieces of music, was released for download on July 5, 2019 by Lakeshore Records. Previously, Universal Island Records had released another soundtrack, which in addition to the songs from the film also contains a selection of Sharma's compositions.

A first trailer was presented in November 2018. The film was shown for the first time on January 28, 2019 as part of the Sundance Film Festival and was released in selected US cinemas on February 14, 2019. He started there nationwide on February 22, 2019. A theatrical release in Germany took place on May 1, 2019.

Reviews

The film has so far received the approval of 93 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and achieved an average rating of 7.3 out of a possible 10 points.

Variety's Dennis Harvey writes that while Fighting with My Family may not be an Oscar contender, he has enough wit, heart and energy to make non-wrestling fans enjoyable too.

The film critic Antje Wessels writes that Fighting with My Family turns out to be something like the all-round carefree package of a feel-good comedy, which tells the tragic life story of the former professional wrestler Saraya-Jade Bevis with a lot of sensitivity and never at the expense of cheap gags retold. You don't have to be a wrestling fan to understand the scope of her story, says Wessels: “The enthusiasm for the sport is transmitted through Knight, who is at the center of the story, whose cohesion is at least as strong as the will to at some point To be involved with the big players in the business is at least as big, so that it doesn't take long before the enthusiasm is transferred to the audience. " Stephen Merchant never artificially presses on the tear gland , although the real Paige's career ultimately came to a tragic end . Self-discovery and self-acceptance also played a major role in Fighting With My Family and ultimately turned the film into an absolutely inspiring, true story that ultimately illustrates the sport in a fascinating way for laypeople through clearly filmed and carefully choreographed wrestling scenes.

The film's worldwide revenue from theatrical screenings is $ 38.5 million.
