action

An earthquake, which is unusually strong for this region, destroys the Hoover Dam in the border area between Nevada and Arizona. Kim Park, the research partner of the seismologist Dr. Lawrence Hayes. Alarmed by the events, Hayes accelerated his research and came to the conclusion that a previously unprecedented earthquake would shake California as the San Andreas Rift drifts apart .

Rescue pilot Ray Gaines is called to the disaster area for emergency relief, while his daughter Blake is in San Francisco with his ex-wife's new boyfriend, Daniel Riddick . Meanwhile, Gaines' ex-wife Emma meets with her boyfriend's sister in Los Angeles . Then that of Dr. Hayes anticipated earthquakes in the region and destroyed nearly all buildings. Gaines is able to rescue his ex-wife from the collapsing building with the help of his helicopter, but damages his aircraft in the process. Meanwhile, San Francisco was also hit. Blake and Riddick failed to escape in time. Rather, Blake is trapped in a car in an underground parking garage that continues to collapse. Riddick abandons her in search of help. She is only saved by the brothers Ben and Ollie. The three manage to reach Blake's parents by phone and arrange their rescue from the disaster area.

First by helicopter, later by stolen pick-up and a small plane, Ray and Emma make it to San Francisco, but there they discover that the Coit Tower , the agreed meeting point, is on fire. Shortly afterwards, the earth shook again, with a 9.6 on the Richter scale, the strongest earthquake in history. Blake, Ben and Ollie save themselves in a skyscraper before the subsequent Megatsunami , who kills thousands, while Ray and Emma face the wave in a motorboat. Meanwhile, Riddick is killed by a container on the Golden Gate Bridge .

While her daughter and the brothers are trapped in the skyscraper, which is gradually filling up, Ray and Emma go in search of her and finally find her. Ray manages to rescue Blake from the building, half drowned. A resuscitation seems to have failed at first, but finally succeeds. The family is happily reunited and a romantic relationship has developed between Blake and Ben, while San Francisco has turned into an island due to the earthquake.

production

Shooting of the film in AT&T Park

Planning for the film began in 2011, but despite the rather simple plot, there were problems with the first draft of the script by Jeremy Passmore and Andre Fabrizio . Because of this, Allan Loeb and Carlton Cuse were hired to revise the design. Since the producers were not satisfied even after the revision, they finally had Chad and Carey Hayes rework the script a second time .

Johnson and Gugino are working together for the third time in San Andreas after The Hunt for the Magic Mountain and Faster . Director Peyton has already staged The Journey to the Mysterious Island , in which Johnson also played the leading role.

marketing

Because of the earthquake in Nepal shortly before the film was released, Warner Bros. announced on April 30, 2015 that it would change the advertising campaign for the film. Promotional material for the film contained information on how to help those affected in Nepal. In addition, a campaign was started to provide information about protective measures and preparations for natural disasters. The poster and trailer, however, have not been changed.

synchronization

The German synchronization was carried out by the RC Production Kunze & wonders for a dialogue book of Tobias Neumann under the dialogue director of Marius Clarén .

reception

San Andreas received mixed reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes , 51% of 228 reviews were positive in their judgment, Metacritic determined a score of 43 based on 42 reviews. The film service judged: “Routinely staged disaster film, which uses the unimaginable extent of the events only as a background for a clichéd, simply constructed family melodrama. Also, the suffering of the population is not nearly adequately taken into account in terms of dramaturgy and staging. "The editorial staff of Cinema said:" From now on Roland Emmerich has a sharp competitor in Brad Peyton. Like Emmerich's “ The Day after Tomorrow ” or “ 2012 ”, B-movie manufacturer Peyton (“ The Journey to the Mysterious Island ”) extensively plunders the catastrophe cinema of the seventies and increases the digital destruction factor to unimagined heights. [...] Films like "San Andreas" shouldn't be taken too seriously. It offers well-made action entertainment, leaves no cliché unattended, but remains consistently exciting and consistent in its over-the-top dramaturgy. "
