The Nordstern is a former steam tug and a passenger ship . It is based in Brandenburg an der Havel . The steamer belonged to the fleet of the Nordstern shipping company named after it until the end of 2017 . It is designated as a technical monument .

history

The Nordstern was built in 1902 in the Gebr. Wiemann shipyard in Brandenburg an der Havel for Golsch & Kahle from Brandenburg. The total price was 43,000 gold marks . It was designed as a tugboat and also for passenger shipping. In contrast to other steam tugs, it was painted white and had a smooth deck. In towing operations on the Havel and its tributaries, the Nordstern usually pulled six barges .

In 1910 Adolf Sutor bought the ship. Initially, the Nordstern was used by Sutor to transport fired bricks from Beetzsee to Charlottenburg during the week for the stone transport cooperative . On Sunday the steamer was in or near Berlin on behalf of the Spree-Havel steamship company "Stern" as a passenger ship. The Nordstern was approved for 264 people at that time.

There was a larger cabin in the front and a smaller cabin in the back of the ship. The bar was in the larger cabin. The cabin walls were paneled with wood, the ceiling was supported by ornate consoles . The stove was between the wheelhouse and the chimney on deck. Havel water was boiled in the steam cooker above the kettle. The stove could be covered with a flap. The wheelhouse was only demarcated by a parapet for the sake of visibility . The sleeping places for the crew were under the stairs.

In 1937 Adolf Sutors son Otto took over the ship. This was a member of the Unterhavel tugboat cooperative. The Nordstern was rebuilt. The towing power of the steamer has been increased. A deckhouse with a summer kitchen was installed. The winter kitchen and living rooms were below deck. Home port was Briest . As a result, the Nordstern was also used on the Elbe beyond Hamburg . As the parade ship of the Unterhavel tugboat cooperative, when the Mittelland Canal opened in 1938 , she was the first screw steamer with two trailers to enter the new Rothensee ship lift . It was also used, for example, for UFA film recordings . During the Second World War, the little trouble-prone were steam pumps of the North Star used to pump out boats. In 1942 an air mine in Spandau destroyed the upper deck with the wheelhouse and the chimney.

After the Second World War, Brandenburg an der Havel became the ship's home port again. The tugboat drove to Stettin and the Stettiner Haff . During repair work, he was used, among other things, to haul in the Görden Bridge to be rebuilt over the Silo Canal in Brandenburg an der Havel and a railway bridge over Lake Templin . After Otto Sutor retired, he leased the Nordstern Heinz Siebert from Plaue . In addition to being used as a push tug, it was also used as an icebreaker at times . In 1967 the boiler system was rebuilt, increasing the output from 275 to 303 hp. In 1977 a pusher shoulder was attached to the Nordstern , which could then also be used as a pusher tug.

At the end of the 1970s, the steamship threatened to be scrapped . In this situation, Lothar Bischoff acquired the Nordstern in 1979 and thus saved it from being scrapped . A general overhaul of the machines followed. The renovated Nordstern drove to Bad Schandau and to the 750 year celebration in Oderberg . Furthermore, she was 1982/83 exhibition of the exhibition upstream and downstream of the City Museum Brandenburg . The former owner Otto Sutor led across the ship. In the following years up to 1990 she was used as a tugboat or thrust .

After the political change, the Nordstern returned to Hamburg for the first time in May 1990 for the port's birthday . As a result, she was chartered by Stern und Kreisschiffahrt in Berlin as an excursion steamer. Since 1991 she has been the flagship of the Nordstern shipping company. In 1994, the steamer in the Havelberg shipyard was completely renovated . The steam engine was completely overhauled in Hamburg. Since the renovation, it has been approved for 50 passengers.

For the 2015 Federal Horticultural Show , the Nordstern is moored alongside the Luise as an exhibition steamer at the historic port at the Packhof garden show area in Brandenburg an der Havel. Furthermore, one of the stylized flower boats on the BUGA site was named after the steam tug.

When the Nordstern Reederei was sold, it was not taken over by the new owner, but was acquired by an unknown owner.
