history

Stone gate tower as a second museum location

The history of the Brandenburg City Museum begins in 1868 with the founding of the Historisches Verein zu Brandenburg an der Havel. This maintained a first museum in the stone gate tower in the new town of Brandenburg . Between 1887 and 1923 the historical association was based in the late Gothic brick tower . It was used as a repository for the collections and as an exhibition space. Due to the cramped conditions, the historical association has shown the first permanent exhibition on the city's history in the Frey House since 1923 , the ground floor of which was given to the association for use by Ernst Paul Lehmann in the old town of Brandenburg . The outbuilding and the rest of the house were still occupied.

In 1936 the Frey-Haus was transferred from the Lehmann heirs to the city of Brandenburg and three years later the historical association transferred its holdings to the municipality. From this time onwards one can or must speak of a municipal museum.

After the stone gate tower had been used differently in the meantime, it was re-established as a museum location in the mid-1960s. The city museum uses the defense tower for special exhibitions . Due to damage, however, the tower was closed by the building authorities in 1988 and only reopened as a museum after the renovation in April 1995 with an exhibition on the city's history.

Exhibitions

In January 2018 the permanent exhibition The Climbing Monkey TOM - Toys from the City of Brandenburg / Havel was on view in the Frey-Haus, and the permanent exhibition Along the Havel - Ships, boatmen, traditions in the museum in the Steintorturm . The overall view of the city's history, which is shown in the Frey-Haus, was not exhibited at the beginning of 2018. In addition to the permanent exhibitions, the rooms are also used for special exhibitions. In Brandenburg, exhibition spaces outside of the two museum locations , such as the Gothic House, are also used.
