history

The Frey House is located in the old town of Brandenburg . It was built in 1723 in the Baroque style. The builder was Colonel von Massow, the commander of the royal regiment of Friedrich Wilhelm I. For the Massow Palace , stones from St. Mary's Church , which was demolished in 1722, were used. The name Frey-Hauss dates back to 1751, when it or its owners were exempt from paying city taxes . The house remained the residence of the regimental commanders of the Prussian Infantry Regiment No. 36, which was based in Brandenburg.

Later, the Frey House housed an organ and spinet factory , among other things . In 1912, the toy manufacturer Ernst Paul Lehmann, based in Brandenburg, acquired the building. Since the museum in the Steintorturm suffered from a lack of space, the historical association moved from this to the Frey House in 1923. In 1936 the building was transferred to the city by Lehmann's heirs . Furthermore, in 1939 the museum was transferred from the historical association to the city.
