The Beetzsee is an Ice Age channel lake in the western state of Brandenburg . It extends 18 km, first to the north, then after a sharp bend to the northeast into the district of Potsdam-Mittelmark and ends at the municipality of Päwesin . The lake itself belongs entirely to the area of the city of Brandenburg an der Havel , whereby the boundary of the independent city often coincides with the central shoreline or runs just a few meters from the shore. The lake has a maximum depth of nine meters with an average depth of 3 meters. The Beetzsee consists of the southern three lake basins of the Beetzseerinne , which are connected by narrow navigable canals (strings). To the northeast, the Beetzsee is connected to a fourth lake basin, the Riewendsee , via another strand . Due to the construction of the Silo Canal and its shipping pier, the southern tip of the lake was partially separated from the rest of the lake and is often incorrectly labeled on modern topographic maps.

description

The Beetzsee in the southern area of the Beetzseerinne

The Beetzsee emerged in the Beetzseerinne after the last, the Vistula cold period . Inland ice advancing from northeast to southwest and pressurized circulating meltwater formed the channel. After the glacial ice thawed, the basins filled with groundwater and surface water, so that today's chain of several lakes was formed. The channel is interrupted by several gutter sleepers, over which flat and narrow connections between the individual basins, the strands, lead. Beetzsee is the name given to the three southern lake basins of the Rinne. The lake basins have an elongated and, especially in the second basin, pronounced meander-like course, which is typical of glacial channels . In earlier maps, these lake basins were differentiated by name. The middle of the three lakes in the Schmettauschen map series was called Butzower or Ketzürer See and the northern Bagower See. Further lakes of the Beetzseekette are to the north the Riewendsee, the Klein Behnitzer See and the Groß Behnitzer See .

Numerous landscape protection areas characterize the Beetzsee and its banks . It is located in the Westhavelland Nature Park . The largest Beetzseeinsel Buhnenwerder is designated as a nature reserve with the former largest black-headed gull colony in Germany. Another Beetzsee island is the Hünensteg , also called Acapulco.

The Beetzsee is used by sailors, anglers, swimmers, rowers and motor water sports enthusiasts. The Beetzsee regatta course is a nationally and internationally important sports facility . It is located in the city of Brandenburg and has been the venue for many national and international water sports events since 1969. In 1972 the European Rowing Championships were held there. In 2009, the Beetzsee with its regatta course in the city of Brandenburg was the venue for the European Canoe Racing Championships .

Neighboring cities and communities

The following cities and municipalities border the lake in a clockwise direction: In the south lies the city of Brandenburg an der Havel, to which the lake in its entire extent also belongs. The municipality of Beetzsee with the districts of Brielow and Radewege, the municipality of Beetzseeheide with the districts of Butzow , Ketzür and Gortz and Päwesin with the districts of Bollmannsruh and Bagow join on the western shore of the lake . The Päwesin district is located on the east bank, at the transition to the Riewendsee. The district of Lünow and the district of Grabow am See are from the municipality of Roskow . Mötzow on the southern east bank is part of the municipality of Beetzseeheides.

Legend

At the end of the 19th century, the barber Fritze Bollmann lived in the city of Brandenburg , who, only according to legend, drowned while fishing in the Beetzsee and then became known through a mocking song. The place Bollmannsruh is named after him.
