The 2009 European Canoeing Championships took place from June 25th to 28th, 2009 on the Beetzsee regatta course in Brandenburg an der Havel . Around 500 athletes from 35 nations took part.

At the European Championships, competitions in canoe racing were held in 27 disciplines. For the first time at an international championship, the world championship program of the International Canoe Association , which was changed in December 2008, came into play, in which over 200 meter relay races in single kayaks and single canoes instead of races in four-person kayaks and four-person canoes.

The event was organized by the European Canoe Association and the German Canoe Association hosted it . The event was the first international canoe championship in East Germany since the end of the GDR . The patron of the event was the Brandenburg Prime Minister Matthias Platzeck .

The most successful team of the competitions was the German national canoe racing team , which with six wins, ten silver and four bronze medals just ahead of Hungary (6/9/2) and Belarus . A total of around 10,000 spectators attended the route. The final races at the Olympic dance dances were broadcast live by ARD and ZDF .
