Jumanji: The Next Level

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (Original title: Jumanji: The Rundown ) is a fantasy - adventure film by Jake Kasdan , the American US in the December 20, 2017 and came a day later in the German cinemas. It is an indirect sequel to Jumanji from 1995 , set in another world. Unlike in the previous film, Jumanji: Willkommen im Jungle is not an old board game that draws players into an adventurous world, but a video game , and the action takes place predominantly in the Jumanji jungle.

action

In 1996 the father of the teenager Alex Vreeke found a board game with the inscription "Jumanji" on the beach. He gives it to his son, who, however, prefers to spend his free time at his game console. When Alex is woken up during the night by a sound made by the game, he finds a cartridge for his console in the box, and while he is playing, a flash of green light illuminates his room.

20 years later. Spencer, a teenager who describes himself as a nerd , writes an essay for school for his classmate Anthony Johnson, known as "Fridge," because he would otherwise be kicked off the sports team. To hand it over, they meet at the house of Alex, who disappeared without a trace 20 years ago, is now run down and is occupied by the eerie Mr. Vreeke. Since their dizziness is discovered in school, both are ordered by Principal Bentley to tidy up a basement room, along with two other "detainees": the self-loving Bethany, who is constantly busy with her smartphone, even during class work, as well Martha, who was naughty to her PE teacher. While cleaning up, they discover Alex's old game console with the Jumanji module. Having connected the console to the TV and their characters have chosen - one of the five characters is locked for the selection - they start the game and be in selbiges drawn.

The four teenagers find themselves in a jungle in the bodies of their chosen characters, and each has a tattoo of three stripes on the left forearm. Spencer became Dr. Smolder Bravestone, a muscle-bound giant with no weaknesses. Fridge has become the zoologist Franklin "Mouse" Finbar, who is only about half his size , Bravestone's weapon and backpack carrier with the weaknesses cake, speed and strength. Martha finds herself in the body of the scantily clad fighter Ruby Roundhouse, whose weakness is poisons. Bethany is horrified to discover that her character is the short, stocky cartographer Professor Sheldon "Shelly" Oberon. She runs away and is devoured by a hippo. Immediately afterwards a kind of fanfare sounds and it falls unscathed from the sky. The group realizes that they have been drawn into the video game and escapes from the hippos in an approaching vehicle.

Its driver, Nigel, is a non-player character who tells you about your role in the game. You must break Jumanji's curse by retrieving a jewel that the villain Russel Van Pelt stole from a jaguar shrine and putting it back in the shrine. The first level of the game was the hippopotamus attack, now you have to escape a group of aggressive motorcyclists in the second level and fight a black mamba in the next , with Fridge's zoological knowledge helping them. In the meantime Martha is fatally injured in battle, Fridge explodes after eating cake and Spencer dies after falling into an abyss after a fight with Fridge. In doing so, they discover that after each return the number of stripes on their forearms has decreased by one, which makes the group aware that each of them only had three lives and that if their last life is lost, they may be threatened with ultimate death. Jefferson "Seaplane" McDonough, a pilot and the fifth character, whose player says he has been stuck in the game for months, helps them escape from Van Pelt's henchmen. The group realizes that they can only leave the game together and that Jefferson is Alex Vreeke, who was sucked into the game by the console 20 years ago. He lives in a jungle house built by its former resident, Alan Parrish . Alex has already given up hope of ever being able to complete and leave the game, especially since he only has one life left and one weakness against the ubiquitous mosquitoes.

In level 4 they steal a helicopter from a warehouse and make it through the Jaguar Gorge, where Spencer sacrifices one of Fridge's life in a daring action in order to get back the lost jewel. Alex is stung by a mosquito, causing him to lose his last life and collapse, but Bethany is able to revive him by transferring one of her remaining two lives to Alex. Arrived at the jaguar shrine, which is located on a high rock, the group manages together and using the penultimate lives of Spencer and Martha to put the jewel back into the jaguar head. Together they pronounce the name of the game "Jumanji", which breaks the curse and destroys Van Pelt. You will be picked up by Nigel and sent back to your world. On the way home they pass Alex's house, which is no longer neglected, but rather very handsome, and meet him there. He was kicked out of the game in 1996, has grown accordingly and now has a family. He named his daughter after Bethany because she sacrificed one of her lives for him in the game. Days later, the four, who have since become steadfast friends, meet at school where Spencer and Martha kiss for the first time. Finally, Fridge destroys the game console with a bowling ball.

characters

Dwayne Johnson plays Dr. Smolder Bravestone
Kevin Hart plays Franklin "Mouse" Finbar
Jack Black plays Professor Sheldon "Shelly" Oberon
Karen Gillan plays Ruby Roundhouse
Nick Jonas plays Jefferson "Seaplane" McDonough

Spencer / Dr. Smolder Bravestone

Spencer is an intelligent and hardworking student. In his free time he likes to play computer games.

In the game, Spencer becomes Dr. Smolder Bravestone, a muscle-packed, bald man who can move exceptionally fast and has enormous strength. In addition, Bravestone emanates an aura that impresses even his group members. Bravestone has no weaknesses.

Anthony "Fridge" Johnson / Franklin "Mouse" Finbar

Nicknamed “Fridge” by everyone, Anthony Johnson is a tall teenager who is dying to stay on his school's sports team. Since he is concerned that his homework may not be good enough to get ahead in school, he enlists Spencer's help, whom he has known from childhood.

In the game, Fridge becomes the tiny Franklin "Mouse" Finbar. In the Jumanji jungle, he is Bravestone's weapon and backpack carrier. His skills include detailed knowledge of Jumanji's wildlife, but he cannot run fast and when he eats cake he explodes.

Bethany / Professor Sheldon "Shelly" Oberon

The pretty Bethany likes to take selfies of herself.

In the game, Bethany becomes Professor Sheldon Oberon because when she chooses the character, she believes that "Shelly" is a girl's name. Professor Oberon is a stocky man in the game, and as a cartographer, he is the only one in the group who can read the map that was given to them at the beginning of the game. For Bethany, being a man is a whole new experience in his body.

Martha / Ruby Roundhouse

Martha usually separates herself from her other classmates. She doesn't like sport and would rather only learn what prepares her for life and study. She has a hard time talking to guys. Secretly, she is a little in love with Spencer.

In the game Martha becomes Ruby Roundhouse, a sporty and attractive young woman who has mastered all kinds of martial arts, such as karate and dance fighting, an ability that she does not know what it is at the beginning, but which gives her special powers in the game. Ruby's weakness is poison.

Alex Vreeke / Jefferson "Seaplane" McDonough

Alex Vreeke is a teenager who loves listening to metal and playing on his console.

In the game he was sucked into back in 1996, Alex is the pilot Jefferson "Seaplane" McDonough. However, Alex has not yet noticed how long he's been stuck in the game. He assumes a few months. In reality, however, it's been 20 years. Because his first attempt to fly with a hot air balloon was unsuccessful, he has concerns about flying a helicopter. Only in the group, which he completes as a missing part, does he learn to have confidence in his game-given abilities. Its weak point are mosquitoes. When he is stung by one and he threatens to lose his last remaining life, he is saved by Bethany by giving him one of her lives.

Nigel Billingsley

Nigel, the first non-player character the group meets in the game, explains their task to them at the beginning and ultimately releases them from the game by sending them back to their real world. Nigel can only react within the parameters programmed into him.

Russel Van Pelt

The NPC Russel Van Pelt represents the final boss ("boss monster"). According to the legend of the game, he once removed the jewel from the jaguar shrine, which gave him his overwhelming power. Therefore, he wants to prevent the group from bringing the stone back there with all possible means.

Filming

Large parts of the outdoor shots were taken on the Kualoa Ranch and against the backdrop of the Kualoa Mountains

The shooting took place from August 2016 in Honolulu , Hawaii . Large parts of the exterior shots were taken on Oahu , a large number of scenes on the Kualoa Ranch, known as the "backlot of Hawaii". The Kualoa Mountains have already served as a backdrop for films such as Jurassic Park , 50 First Dates and the television series Lost . The scene with jumping into a waterfall, which can also be seen in the trailer, was shot in Papaikou, in the north of Hilo on the Big Island. This waterfall was previously used for the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Championships. Further recordings were made in the Atlanta Metro Studios in Union City .

The film includes a tribute to Robin Williams , who starred in Jumanji . In June 2017, Jack Black, who plays Professor Shelly Oberon in the film, explained the connection between Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and the 1995 film: In the sequel, they explored the Jumanji Jungle to get control of the game, what a life or death struggle is. But they also find in the film a jungle house that Alan Parrish left there, which is similar to that of the Robinson family . It's like Parrish is helping them without actually being there, Black said.

reception

Age rating

In Germany the film is FSK 12 . The reason for the release states: “The easily understandable story deals with topics such as friendship and team spirit with typical genre elements and numerous turbulent action scenes. Children under the age of 12 can be overwhelmed by the emotional intensity of individual scenes and the dark design of the villains. However, 12-year-olds are able to classify these aspects in the clearly fictional and unrealistic setting and to distance themselves sufficiently. "

Reviews

So far, the film has a score of 76 percent on Rotten Tomatoes (as of February 27, 2018).

Jake Kasdan directed the film

The Huffington Post says that director Jake Kasdan , who has already proven with Bad Teacher and Sex Tape that he knows what makes viewers laugh, is definitely not the only factor why the film is not lacking in humor . Even if the young viewers didn't have that much to do with the classic from 1995 , many would still like to think back to the magic that Robin Williams brought us , and the sequel gives you the opportunity to relive this magic, because the spirit of the original and of Williams is omnipresent in the film: “The protagonists will find some clues in the game that Robin Williams left there as Alan Parrish. It is also he who built the jungle house and so he is not only briefly embedded in the story, but plays a central role in the entire film. A nice way to let an old film live on in a new version. "

Matthias Halbig reviewed in the Märkische Allgemeine that director Jake Kasdan had “a really hilarious film tingling down on the audience that beats the countless lame Hollywood ducks in the slapstick genre of the last few years”. The film preaches “tolerance and community spirit” to the audience, but “without getting on their nerves for a second”.

Gross profit

After revenues of 36.4 million US dollars on its first weekend in the USA, the film was able to increase this by more than 38 percent to around 50 million US dollars on the second weekend. After its launch, the film landed at number 1 on the cinema charts in a number of countries, including the USA and China, Brazil, Switzerland and France. The film's worldwide revenue from theatrical screenings is over $ 962 million. As a result, the film is number 5 among the most successful films of 2017 and number 41 among the world's most successful films of all time . So far, the film has had around two million visitors in Germany.

With grossing US $ 403.7 million, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle became the most successful Sony film in US cinema history. The previous record was held by Spider-Man for 16 years .
