action

The private detective Daryl Zero is considered brilliant, but not always practical. He works with lawyer Steve Arlo who takes care of the detective agency's finances.

The entrepreneur Gregory Stark is blackmailed and assigns Zero to find the blackmailer. Zero meets Gloria, whom he finds attractive. She later turns out to be a daughter of Stark and is suspected of being a blackmailer.

Zero finds the highly stressful tape and the keys to the safe and gives them back to his client. Since Stark could endanger his daughter, Arlo gives the woman some money and a plane ticket at the instigation of his partner. She is supposed to hide for a few months.

Arlo marries, Zero is among the guests. He also attends the funeral of the killer who killed Gloria's mother.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film could be a good pilot for a television series, but it disappoints as a feature film. It is only amusing and refreshing for the first 30 minutes; it works by about 15 minutes too long. Bill Pullman seems "sovereign". Ben Stiller is "sufficient" for his role, but "no more".

Roger Ebert mentioned in the Chicago Sun-Times of January 30, 1998 the "surprising" twists and turns of the plot, which he compared with the novels of Ross Macdonald . The cast makes the comedy "increasingly delightful".

background

The shooting took place in Portland ( Oregon ) and in Los Angeles instead. The production amounted to an estimated 5 million US dollars . The film grossed approximately $ 1.98 million in US cinemas.
