Get Out of Orange County is a 2002 American comedy film based on a script by Mike White .
action
Shaun Brumder, a young surfer from Orange County , searches for a new goal in life after the death of his best friend and stumbles upon a book that changes his life. After reading the book several times, it is clear to him that he wants to go to Stanford to become a writer and to meet his role model, Marcus Skinner, the author of the book. Since Shaun gets good grades despite less effort, this goal shouldn't be a problem for him at all. The family is anything but idyllic. Shaun's father divorced his mother and lives with a much younger woman. The mother is an alcoholic and argues with everyone day in, day out (preferably with the maid). Also living in the household are his mother's new husband, Bob, who is in a wheelchair, and Shaun's drug-addicted older brother Lance, who has nothing to do but beg Shaun for a urine sample for the drug test. It's time for Shaun: let's get out of Orange County.
The school administrator, who is responsible for university matters, has a mishap - she swaps Shaun's data with that of a classmate, which results in Shaun being rejected by Stanford. Shaun is devastated and doesn't know what to do. He asks his father if he would like to make a generous donation to Stanford in order to get him a scholarship - but the latter refuses. An invitation from two representatives from Stanford also goes wrong; not only his mother's excessive alcohol consumption, but also Lance's demeanor ruin this attempt. Shaun is finished.
After realizing what he's done, Lance decides to make amends and heads off to Stanford with Shaun and Ashley. He'll come up with a solution. While Ashley and Shaun try to get in touch with the university dean responsible for enrollment, who happens to be consuming drugs that Lance mistakenly mistook for painkillers, Lance sleeps with his secretary. Unfortunately, Lance set fire to the school building with the rejection list, which he sets on fire and throws it in the trash.
In the meantime, Shaun meets and has an insightful conversation with Marcus Skinner. Ultimately, everyone comes home with nothing achieved and sees that Shaun's father has moved back in since he was reconciled with his mother. The father decides to make the donation to Stanford for some secretariat that is believed to have burned down.
But Shaun doesn't want to go to Stanford anymore. He doesn't have to go to college to become a writer. He decides to stay in Orange County.
criticism
The lexicon of the international film judged: “Black-humorous teen comedy that largely avoids the depths of the genre and comes up with some pretty ideas. Ultimately, it still lacks substance, so that the good performers work off an abundance of non-commitments. "
The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.
